I liked it...except for the battery,September 30, 2009
By RNCfrom Spokane, WA
"The collar worked well but the battery charge didn't last nearly as long as the advertised 40-60 hours. Maybe half that, which wouldn't have been as much of a problem if it didn't take 8 hours to recharge. Extra batteries area available, but not easy to switch out. Will return for another collar that recharges in 2 hours."

dog training collar,September 29, 2009
By canadiandeerhunter66
"rugged , lasts for years and lots of full speed running through the bush that my dog puts out. It is a replacement as nothing lasts forever but the last one I had it for four years and it got used every day. I would recomend this for anybody that wants to still have some long distance control of their dog. Usually the bell is enough to have him racing back."

"so far i am very pleased with the collar. I started 3-years ago with the SD-400 and that worked great for training my dog. I moved up in power with the 1800 so I can work my dog out even farther."

Why didn't I buy this sooner,December 8, 2008
By rngrrixfrom Toronto, OH
"The functionality and effectiveness restored the enjoyment of bird hunting with two dogs. My only regret was I didn't buy this unit sooner. Was nice being able to control both dogs with one controller and still be able to get my gun up on a ring-necked pheasant. Can you say ROOSTER?"

6 month old 60 lb. Lab Mix,September 9, 2008
By MEandMileyfrom Tennessee on the lake
"Very smart dog, very head strong. After only a month with the collar it's a joy to see her respond now to only my voice. I read the instructions and watched the video. Did exactly what was recommended. Only had to use the correction on the lowest two settings a few times. Now all I have to use is the tone and she responds. The tone sound will stop her from running after cars and other dogs. She has no fear or dread of the collar because I used a rope for training before and with the collar just like the instructions say. She associates the correction more with the rope than the collar. Read the instructions and watch the video. The collar holds a charge for about a week and the range is as advertised."

ALMOST PERFECT,February 19, 2008
By JAWS88from Sacramento, Ca.
"I have used the collar several times and have been very happy with it's range and it's response. Fits well on the dog and seems to be comfortable for him. I wish it had a clip for the handler unit as to a lanyard as it does get in the way some times hanging around my neck vs being able to clip it to my vest. However this way I should never loose it or then I should get nicked or even zapped."

Lifesafer, peace of mind trainer,January 12, 2008
By AwesomeOpossumfrom Bedford County, PA
"This E-collar was an excellent investment. Our dog has a high prey drive; once she is in pursuit she cannot be controlled by voice command. The SportDog collar is her lifesaver in that it helps to keep her safe instead of running off and possibly getting lost and/or hurt. The range is excellent. She was chasing deer one day, steaking across a field a great distance from me and the collar "reminded" her to turn around immediately and come back to me. She is now trained with just the beep and nick features that I rarely have to use the zap feature. She doesn't mind wearing the collar because she knows that she'll be off of her leash, a great joy for any dog. I read the reviews before choosing this collar. One thing noted was that the receiver collar button is hard to turn on. I found this as well, you really have to press to hit it, but I feel that this is a good feature so that it does not accidentily get turned off in the field. I have been using the collar for about three months now and we are very pleased with it. I definately recommend it."

They're Getting Better,January 7, 2008
By PrairieThunderfrom Minneapolis, MN
"I purchased the 1800 about 3 years ago and have had on again, off again issues since. I've been through at least 4 transmitters and 2 collars. It should be noted that while there is a lifetime warranty, it only covers parts. After the first year, you'll need to pay for the labor for repairs (approx. $40). I too have had problems with buttons and knobs on the transmitter. I've returned one transmitter because the side button failed. Either it broke or ? because when it was pushed, there was no detent. The knob that sets the stimulus level fell off of two of the transmitters after ~6 months of use (I use mine everyday). Two of the transmitters stopped working after they were dropped. Apparently the crystal couldn't withstand the shock of landing on a concrete floor. As for collars, the on-off button on one failed and you couldn't turn it on. Another collar would stop working after it was submersed in water but would work when it was out of the water. On the positive side, their quality seems to be getting better. The last collar and transmitter I received appear to be much better and have been working for at least 6 months without failure. The latest transmitter has etched numbers that haven't worn off after use. I also like the tone feature and is mainly what I use (which may be why the side button wore out on some units). I like the ability to program the second button for a one second tone followed by stimulus. The range is great. The transmitter seems to be quite waterproof as mine has sat on the bottom of a lake for a couple of hours (it fell in at dusk and couldn't see it due to glare until dark and a flashlight). If I could change things, I'd make the collar smaller (they do make a smaller one), give the probes more metallic surface area, and supply a car charger. Good Luck"

VERY SURPRISED,October 9, 2007
By VERYSURPRISED
"I am very surprised that no one else had problems with these collars! I have went through six of them and there was not a good one in the bunch! Two of them the buttons fell off. I then got one that would not charge so I took it back. I asked Cabela's to open it at the store and we found another that would not charge. I finally got one that would charge and took it home and charged it for 24 hours. I went to program it and it would not program. I thought it might be the transmitter so I reprogramed the other collar (the one that came with the unit) and it worked fine. Luckily Cabela's was very generous and let me exchange for a different brand! I never had problems with the original collar and transmitter but I bought it for multiple dog use! Not being able to buy another collar was a MAJOR PROBLEM! THANK YOU CABELA'S FOR GETTING RID OF THE HEADACHE!"

Great Product,October 8, 2007
By gwgdog66from OKC, OK
"I got my SD 1800 as a gift. I had the SD1200 and this one is an upgrade. It's easy to program, and the charge lasts for well over a week, using it every day. I purchased the Add-A dog Collar so I can use one transmitter to control both dogs. I have rated this a 5 star even though to the Add A Collar receiver went out and would't hold a charge or receive a signal. I called Sport Dog Support, and they are sending a replacement receiver. They were very helpful in helping determine the receiver was bad. A plus is that I was able to program the old SD 1200 Receiver to the new transmitter, and did not miss any training due to the bad receiver."

SD-1800,September 25, 2007
By 72Peterfrom Lafayette, LA
"After doing a ton of research on all of the various collars, transmitters, features and reading the reviews, I decided on the SD-1800. I was not disappointed in the least. I have a small squirrel dog and I get transmission up to 1/2 mile through the woods ! And I hunt in hilly, heavily wooded terrain. I've been using the collar for over a month now and have encountered no problems whatsoever. The charge on both the collar and the transmitter last me at least 35 -40 hours before recharge. Both have been submerged in water and mud and all I do is hose them off. I leave the dial on 1, which works fine. They also have one of the best warranty's in the business. I almost bought a transmitter that was not waterproof and that would have been a big mistake. I have no hesitation in recommending this collar, especially after putting it through the workout I've given it."

SD-1800,September 15, 2007
By BobMNfrom Twin Cities, MN
"Great training collar. Some people think this collar does not work. I have heard of problems with transmitters and everything. I have not had a problem with my transmitter other than the numbers wearing off(which I called Sport Dog) on and they said they would send me a new transmitter that has been redesigned with etched on numbers). I also like the ability to program the transmitters buttons so I am not stuck with just tone, cont., and nick. This is an easy to use product that works. The battery on the transmitter and the receiver last quite a long time before needing a recharge. I believe the transmitter lasted about 4-5 months before needing a new charge. Also I received some new probes for the collar from a rep, they work even better than the old ones. Good product, good price, great customer service!"

Awesome Collar,August 26, 2007
By hardheadGSPownerfrom Truckee, CA
"We have a 2 year old Shorthair. The hardest headed and fastest dog I've ever had and she is #5 for me. She learned at about 6 months that she can bolt. It's been an ongoing ordeal for us to correct that, with no luck. We've even tried to leash her with our older very well behaved GSP. No luck with that either they both got lost. We have 1000 acres of mountain property and she's taken off several times and we spend hours trying to find her. She gets in trouble and tied up after but I guess it's worth the fun she encounters while off and running. So when we are there she's constantly tied up to the porch or trees, even swimming she's had to wear a line. We finally purchased this collar. We worked with her for about a week before going to the cabin property. We were still concerned that she'd take off. But it's working well. She only needs a beep most of the time, and occasionally a #4 to remind her that we can reach out and touch her. She comes running back. She even got lost on a quad run with my husband and she came running back home to me. So she really gets that she needs to return. She's not thrilled yet when we put it on, but she's definately learning that we have fun when it's on. The distance part seems good and she has been swimming with it on, and it worked well after she came out of the lake. The charge held very well. We're thrilled and we think she will be too, when she realizes that when it's on, the fun really does begin. She has much more freedom, and is even starting to respond better when it's not on. We've had it only about 3 weeks. So the learning curve is still in progress."
