close but no cigar,October 20, 2009
By jonseafrom Hyde Park, MA
"I picked up a Venture 7 as a low-priced reel to go with my new Sage Smallmouth rod. While it is a nicely machined and smooth reel, it's a little TOO smooth - the spool rotates so freely that while casting it spins forward and picks up your reserve line. I was fishing from a kayak and my casts kept getting further and further from the weedline until I figured out the culprit. Traded up to a Lamson Konic - a far superior reel for another $40. Mind you my Loomis spinning rods are some of my favorite gear (try their popping rods for EXCELLENT inshore saltwater) but this reel did not cut it."

Venture 3 Fly Reel,April 6, 2009
By yagerjayfrom Larkspur, Ca
"Simple, durable and a good drag system on it. What more do you need?? I dont see the reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a reel if it does the job well enough. Nothing fancy, but has a nice look to it as well as it is.. I really like this reel."

Great value,April 2, 2009
By Skipper3245from East Coast
"Great value for the price. I got the venture 5 model, and I bought it as a backup. I have a Abel TR/2 and love the palm drag, and that was the only thing that I did not prefer about the Loomis model. I would strongly recommend this anyone who is looking to take a step up from the cabelas prestige model."

A lot of reel for the money,January 21, 2009
By WalleyeRangerfrom Illinois
"This reel is a good value for the price. It has a very smooth bearing set and the drag is silky smooth.
I docked it one star because it seems to lack the option to turn on a clicker when you are reeling in your line. It does have a nice clicker as part of the drag system when line is going out.
I also noticed a little more play than I anticipated in the tolerance between the spool rim and the top of the reel when winding line.
Overall, it should be a fantastic reel for normal trout, panfish, and lite bass fishing."

Loomis Venture Reel,June 2, 2008
By EnglishDoublefrom I reside in Somerset, Kentucky but fish far afield
"The Venture Reel is a good reel, but I had to change the wind from left hand to right hand. Normally the reels are set up for right handed fishermen but apparently this one got by the final check. I the reel has a very loud audible click when playing line out which I personally find objectional. Still, all in all a good reel."

great reel,May 6, 2008
By acesoverfrom East Central Florida
"I recently bought one of these reels and I am very satisfied with both the performance and also the fit and finish. It's one of the smoothest reels on the retrieve I've seen. One spin on the handle and it spins for a long time. And for those of you that like the sound of clickers, it has a nice sound when a good fish takes off. The drag on mine is real smooth, easy to adjust, and it has held up in saltwater very good so far with just a good rinse in freshwater and a little grease on the spindle. Buy one, you'll really enjoy it!!!"

No Drag,May 1, 2008
By Roganefrom Eagle River, AK
"I was told at the shop that this would be a great reel. The first day of fishing the drag would not engage everytime I striopped line. The reel would free spool and then a rat nest would be the result. I gave it a few chances and after about the fifth time I was done. I replaced it with a Okuma SLA, I will never go back."

excellent drag system; great value,November 12, 2007
By STEMPLEfrom Iowa City, IA
"I paid more for this reel than I usually do, and bought it with the extra spool. It is a sharp looking reel, which, more importantly, has a very smooth drag. It is lightweight and is a perfect reel for the many small trout streams in northeast Iowa. No problem with browns, brookies or rainbows in the 13" - 15" range. If I'm ever fortunate enough to get a big brown on my rig, it won't be the reel that fails; it'll be the fisherman. That's as much as you can ask of a reel. The support staff at Cabelas was also wonderful, when I had a question about the reel after it arrived."

Great Reels,March 15, 2007
By JBSF16from South Carolina
"I have two of these reels. One rigged with 4/5 wgt and the other an 8 wgt line. I've used them both for fresh water in Alaskan streams to lakes in the Southeastern U.S. I've never had any issues with either and have found them to be well built and reliable. They are very well made and balance nicely on my St Croix fly rods. I'd highly recommend these reels. You can spend a great deal more on others if that makes you feel better, but unless you are really going after that trophy tarpon...you can't go wrong here."

Good reel,February 27, 2007
By chip3342from Champaign, IL
"First of all, performance of this reel is good. The drag is smooth and easily adjustable. The soft machining of the aluminum is susceptible to scars, but it has no affect on its use. Make sure you get the left or right hand set up before you purchase. The clutch and roller assembly is very difficult to change and is quite easily damaged. Also, the small (eyeglass) sized screws are difficult to remove and easily stripped. G-Loomis is willing to change the handedness for you if you send it in, but then you have to pay extra shipping. Don't buy without it explicitly saying "left" or "right" hand configured. Just a warning. Otherwise, a good reel."

Phenomenal reel,December 2, 2006
By trout35from Scranton, Pa
"I purchased the 5weight reel and it has proven its versatility with different species. It has an extremely quiet and smooth drag. The drag affords the ability to make adjustment on even the most difficult retrieves. I have used the reel to catch species including rainbows exceeding 27?."

Great Value,November 21, 2006
By Lucias257from Lansing, MI
"I use the Loomis Venture 3 for my small trout fly rig. This is a very nice reel made of machined aluminum. The drag is quite smooth and the drag adjustment is large enough for on the fly adjustments. Retrieve is effortless and you can gain line in a hurry if you needed. This is a perfect reel for trout or pan fish and will perform for many years to come. Spare spools are very affordable and easy to change so you can go from 3 to possibly a 5wt line in seconds."
