Scientific Anglers™ Sharkskin™ Saltwater Fly Line – Mist Yellow

  • Super shootability for longer casts with less effort
  • Greatly reduce friction for increased casting distance
  • Sits higher in the water
  • Patented technology increases strength
  • Disperses light so fish aren’t spooked
Sharkskin is one of the most innovative fly lines ever made by Scientific Anglers and is a true revolution in fly-line design. You won't believe how well this fly line performs until you take it out and start casting. Microreplicated structures in the line reduce friction, improve floatation, boost durability and repel water. When it comes time to shoot line, Sharkskin delivers effortless distance by reducing friction through the rod guides. The microtextured coating increases surface area and repellency, allowing the line to sit higher on the water. This improved water shedding also makes for effortless mending. Patented Advanced Shooting Technology (AST) chemistry combined with the line texture strengthen the coating durability. The textured surface also disperses light and reduces the chance of spooking fish.

Not even close to being worth the money
Date:
I've gone through two of these lines. You'd think I'd be smart enough to quit after one.
The upside is the line does slide through the guides like no other line increasing line speed and maybe casting distance. A big maybe. But in the process it sounds like sandpaper working on the guides.
Now the downsides. This line develops and retain memory. Not much of an issue for 30 ft cast, but after 50 ft a royal pain and ultimately you lose everything the line touts in casting distance.
Second issue, you need to wear glove with this line. It's like sandpaper or a knife on your fingers. A full day fishing will trash your hands, makes you wonder about its effects on the guides.
And the final straw for me is the line is not durable. It easily nicks, cuts, or otherwise is easy to damage. Step on it or let it drag on the ground and it will be damaged. On the first line, I drug it aross a rock and it cut in half. So I tried again. Second, line in the process of stretching it out I pull it apart. I'm 60 years old and 50 lbs is more than I can lift so I don't see it as a strength issue.
So if you're trout fishing under 30 ft and want a slick, fast shooting line, and only fish an hour or two, here you go. Otherwise, buy something else.

Did'nt notice that this line floats any better(could be because i mainly use flurocarbon leaders), but it did seem to shoot a bit further and easier. I would recommend investing in some stripping gloves or surgical tape when using this line. Because of the line's texture, repeated casting over long periods of time can actually wear a slight groove into your fingers.

Fly casting is in a sense a sience. The more you refine your efforts the more you get out of it.
To pay an extra $40 to get another 3 or 4 feet hasn't proved worth while for me.

Floating line does not float
Date:
I purchased a Sharkskin 7wt saltwater line for a trip to Belize.
The line cast really well, though a bi noisy, which I already knew about. The color of the line did not spook the bonefish at all.
The Sharkskin does require the use of a stripping guard, as it will eat through your skin.
With more use, however, the line does not float at all.
Not a good thing when you are standing on a flat, cast 70 feet, and 20 feet of your line is sunk. The line will not shoot the final 10 feet, as it is 2-3 feet deep.
I will be contacting Scientific Anglers about this problem.
