Marlin® .22 LR Lever-Action Rimfire Rifle

  • Legendary lever-action design
  • Scope-compatible flat-top receiver
  • Micro-Groove rifling
  • Tube magazine holds 19 .22 LR cartridges
A direct descendent of the Model 1891, the first repeating rifle chambered for the .22 LR, the Golden 39A is legendary among riflemen. Its solid-top side-ejection receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounting, an advantage over top-eject lever guns. Micro-Groove® rifling produces accuracy most out-of-the-box .22s can't touch. The 39A also features a black-walnut stock and forend with cut checkering, semi-buckhorn folding rear sight and ramp front sight with Wide-Scan™ hood, hammer-block safety and gold-plated trigger. It also includes a scope adapter base and an ambidextrous, offset hammer spur for scope use. The tube magazine holds 19 long-rifle cartridges and has a patented closure system.

Disappointed
Date:
Spent a lot of time researching this little rimfire lever action before deciding on the marlin golden 39A. Purchased a new rifle and cleaned and inspected the rifle before taking out for the first firing. At the range I had a lot of problems cycling shells, thought it was just the hollow points but ball nose jammed as well. The internal mechanical parts felt a little rough cycling the lever. I also noticed after a hundred rounds that the lever was not sufficiently deburred so it was very rough on the users hand cycling shells through it. After firing the gun I cleaned it and found metal shavings in it that had not been there the first time I cleaned it, could just need several hundred rounds through it to break it in. In all the rifle is a very nice looking gun but when you pay top dollar for something its nice to get what you paid for. I was also not impressed with Marlins website as they don't seem to want to know what you think of their products.

No problems for 35 years

I used my friend's Model 39 in the 50's, I bought my own Model 39 in the 70's. I still have it and it is in as good condition and shoots as well now as it ever has. Great little rifle for casual varmint and target shooting.

My Favorite Gun
Date:
I love mine--weight and balance feels good in my hands, the trigger (compared to other .22s i've shot and owned) is light and crisp. I've never had misfires or jams with this gun. I agree with another reviewer--It feels like a real gun and not a toy. it seems quite accurate, although I've never tested it in the way I do my big-game rifles. My nephew has taken some small game with it. For a "just for fun" gun, it would sure be hard to part with.
My only complaint is the manual safety, which is an unfortunate modern addition to the traditional lever gun.
It's too bad some folks have had functioning problems with this gun. I bouight mine new about 12 years old, so maybe a touch older is better? I know I've had a new and an old Marlin 336, and can definitely say the older one (a .35 rem) is much more accurate, has a better trigger and just seems like a higher quality rifle.
