OK I guess, but you still need bug repellant

I hate wearing DEET based bug spray and had heard a lot about the Thermacell devices, so I decided to pick up this lantern. My intent was to use it while fishing, and I have taken it out on about half a dozen trips so far.

When you're in an enclosed area or the air is perfectly still, this device works well. It clears out the mosquitoes and some other bugs. Some insects it doesn't seem to affect at all. It takes about 10 minutes for the fumes to take effect, but guess what? During those 10 minutes you can still get bit!

The real problem comes when there's enough wind to blow the fumes away, but not enough to deter mosquitoes. On several trips, I was standing near the lantern and the little bloodsuckers started to bite me on the neck and shoulders when the breeze came up. My legs and body were protected, but obviously the rest of me wasn't.

It also sucks down butane like there's no tomorrow. It comes with three pads and one butane cartridge, but the first cartridge only lasted through one pad. I had it on maybe six hours total.

There's no way to tell at a glance whether the flame is lit, you have to pick up the lantern and peer into a tiny peephole in the side. Since the butane cartridge is hidden from view, you can't tell when it's almost out without taking the lantern completely apart. That means the first indication you're not protected is when hordes of ravenous bugs descend on you. When the first cartridge went, I had approximately 20 bites before I realized it wasn't working.

I'll be keeping the lantern for use under specific situations, but I'm sorry to say the Thermacell did not totally live up to my expectations.

i had heard about thermacell stuff but had never tried it. we bought it and tried it out last night. all i can say is wow. this thing really works. give it a couple minutes to clear the area and then mosquito are gone, and i mean really gone.
