Works good on salmon in saltwater
Date:
One of the few really good castable lures that work for salmon from shore. Most salmon lures are too light to cast any distance, but these have enough weight to really chuck a long way. Their streamlined shape makes them fly really far.
When I lived in Washington state, they worked great on kings, pinks, and silvers (coho). Chrome for the kings, hot pink for the pinks, perch for the silvers. Smear them with a little herring or shrimp flavored Smelly Jelly.
Cast it out, let it fall to the depth you want to fish, then retrieve it with sweeping motions. Hold the rod horizontally, and lift the tip about 2 feet. Then lower it and reel in on the fall to keep a tight line. They won't hang on long, so you want to be able to feel the pickup.
Don't lift the rod tip to the 12 o' clock position, because fish usually strike just as the fall begins or ends. If they hit at the top, you want to have enough leverage to set the hook.
Since the body of the lure is not fixed, it's possible for it to slide up the line when you jig it. If that happens, when the fish hits the hook might not be close enough to the fish to get a good hookset. To fix this, when you tie on, put a bumper both above and below, and tie a swivel about 6" above the top of the lure. This will keep the hook close and won't impede the action.
Happy fishing!

Salt water
Date:
I've never tried these in fresh water, so my schtik will cover salt water shore-casting only. A lot of anglers around here drift on the salt in their boats, either on the bottom for Salmon, Ling or Halibut, and have great success, or in a mooching style.
I use all sizes, from 2" depending on the wind & distance I'm going for. My best success comes from flourescent red/pink, army truck, chrome, perch-chartreuse and the green holo.
I probably have a dozen tied up in my fanny pack on any one day.
I've never been skunked using them. You get good action reeling in or jigging. I also scent them.
My preferred rig is a 7'6" - 12' MH-H rod for the heavier ones, over one oz., and I use long ML-M rods for lighter ones. The longer rod helps shore-casting as you can lift slow, & drop in a controlled manner, getting some good vertical movement as you bring it in. I only cast with casting reels, but most use spinning gear.
I tie mine up on mono, from 20# test to 40# test because the lure spins on the line, and it will abrade if used all morning. I tie in this order... hook, bead, bumper, lure, 2 small beads, Gammy wide gap finesse hook 2/0 on the line, another 12-18" line, swivel. I have a snap swivel on my mainline to change rigged lures until I get today's colour.
I always use a doubled Uni knot for the bottom hook, because the double-tag keeps the bottom bead/bumper in better alignment which means the hook doesn't go a bit sideways.
The Gammy hook I add to the top of the lure gets about half my hookups. You can use an octopus hook, but for this rig, you need the turned-up eye as the bite-area hangs better on the line. (you thread this hook on the leader, don't tie.)
I know, you can do it all on the mainline, without all my glooping around... But, this is a dynamite improvement on a good rig.
It casts (2 oz) almost 300' on my gear, so you get try a lot of holes from one spot.
Cheers!

Great for Canadian Lake Trout
Date:
These buzz bombs work two to one of any other baits we tried this fall. They are a little heavy and one can get tired jigging them from 65 to 85 feet deep. But they seem tp resemble the live shad bait the lakers are after.
