I have used these have also tried the masking tape method. I build mostly fly rods. It is nice to have this behind my reel seat it is nice and uniform and the sand down very easily with a set of reamers that your grips as well.

Full length Reel Seat Shims

I have used several of these now and I prefer them to the shorter piece arbors as they are easier to drill without ruining, and the seem to provide better support and feel under the reel seat.
