Garmin Montana 650T
Date:
I use the Garmin for Geocaching and hiking in the National Forest. This GPS was real easy to upload data, (using the Swiss Army Knife program) for uploading Geocaches in GPX format. Taking pictures is a breeze. The ease of use really sold me on this particular GPS. The touchscreen format is nice, and the large screen is a plus, compared to other GPS models. I cannot say enough about the large screen, as it really makes it nice to use.
When getting 'lost' deep in the forests, this GPS has a backtracking display that takes you right back to the start. This feature has saved me on several occasions, an excellent tool to have in a GPS. The maps are precise and the displays are good.
On the negative side, it did not come with a lanyard for hanging the GPS around the neck. Sometimes I need both hands to hang on to branches and traverse steep hills. My older Garmin ETREX had a nice thin lanyard. If I pay all this money, you would think Garmin would include a simple lanyard.

Garmin® Montana 650T GPS

The purchase was to be for something with a touchscreen and no camera. The camera does come in handy but will not replace a my stand alone camera.
Having had a Colorado 400t already had me leaning to Garmin. The transition to the Montana 650T was fairly seamless. The maps are excellent and were expected to be. The main use for the unit will be Geocaching. Battery use has always been a issue in the past . I expected this to continue but I'm very happy to say batteries have been a none issue. As of now no flaws have been detected. All being said it was a great choice. Not a full 5 rating but real close.

Although a bit pricey, this is an excellent unit. The GPS picks up multiple satellites quickly and is very accurate. The 100k preloaded topo map includes trails in wilderness areas where I hunt that most people could never find on a map. With birdseye view and gps tracking combined with Garmin Basecamp, finding new hunting locations and your way back to camp is remarkably easy and accurate with visibility of rivers/cliffs/etc to avoid. The resolution is great as well as it takes great photos with the location stored where photo was taken. Highly recommended for hunters going deep into back-country/wilderness areas.
