I ordered this specifically for geocaching, and I am very impressed with it. I started geocaching the day it came in the mail. It picked up the satellites within two minutes, and it got me within 10 feet of the cache! Great job Garmin!
Ive owned the etrex about seven yrs now and use it daily to find my 4wheeler when im through hunting or scouting or marking deer scrapes. Also is very useful on tracking wounded deer especially after it gets dark and marking the deer then walking straight back to your bike and then going straight as best u can to your deer and retrieving it..but...it got me really lost when I shot at a deer and went looking for blood and when I turned it on to go back to my bike it pointed in an oppisite dir that I sensed was wrong but I followed it anyway..After 3different course changes I turned it off and finally walked to a deer stand that I knew where I was and found my bike. The nxt day another hunter told me he heard of similar problems after 7 or 8 yrs of use and to call Garmin to reprogram it in the woods which they did on the phone. Ive checked it out 3 times since and it was working fine until the last day of the season it wouldn't turn on every time. I've put it up but will buy another one just like it soon..Everything eventually wears out...
I just received my Garmin Etrex H unit. What I noticed right away is that the battery cover rattles and is very loose when closed (with the batteries installed ). It is far from being a sealed fit. I'm not even going to test it in water as I'm sure it will get soaked. What is puzzling is that it is advertised on every site (I've been to about a half dozen) as being waterproof. Even the box says it is submersible and IPX7 Waterproof (submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes ). I'm very disappointed with these claims. If you're worried about it being waterproof don't get this unit. I have recently read other reviews of problems with the battery cover being so loose that the unit turns off because the batteries partially dislodge (mostly bike riders that mount the unit to their bike). To further explain, the cover is held in place by a small T-handle pin in the center of the cover. It turns 90 degrees to keep the cover from falling off but it does not cam up on an interior surface. The cover rattling gives it a really cheap feel and doesn't make you feel good about the product. You can probably put a piece of foam on top of the batteries to keep the batteries and cover from rattling or coming loose, but if you do this you are bringing the thin rubber edge seal on the inside cover FURTHER away from the unit, providing even more room for water infiltration. It's really surprising that they make the waterproof claims.
As far as the operation goes, it does not have the toggle stick on the front cover like some of the other units which makes it more cumbersome to use. Since the battery cover rattles, it is not waterproof and also does not have the togglestick ( I should have known this before I bought it) , I'm giving it 2 stars. Hope this review helped. Good luck.
