A pair of Matched Target Pistols in .44 Caliber encased with accessories. These matched pistols are most likely of French Origin. Possibly Gastine-Renette or Devisme, both gun makers in Paris France of this time period.
The pistols are numbered 1 & 2 in gold. The turn wrench, mallet, oil can, powder can and bullet mold all appear to be original. The wood handled turn screw is missing. The interior of the case is in good condition. The exterior of the case has been vandalized. The top of the case has had the inlaid trim removed. The decorative shield surrounding the key slot on the side of the case has also been removed. Given the high quality of this cased set, the trim removed was probably gold or gold plate.
These pistols are single shot cap and ball. The stocks are Gutta-Percha. Firearm makers began using this hand resin like product as early as 1860. This would also date the manufacture of these pistols to that time frame. All metal (except the barrel) is engraved. Engraving is of a very high quality.
Pistol number one has patina spots on the barrel and pistol number two is missing its front sight and has a crack on the handle as pictured. The overall condition of the pistols is very good or better. They have nine and three quarter inch octagonal barrels with rifling. Front sights are dove tailed into the barrel and the pistols feature gutta-percha stocks with deeply fluted grips and ornately detailed pommel caps. Breech, escutcheons, tangs, lock plates, hammers and trigger guards are engraved with impressive floral scrollwork.
