Flashers & Flies- Fit For Lake Michigan Kings
Fifteen years ago you couldn't give away flashers and flies to Lake Michigan captains. J-plugs, spoons and dodgers and squids were all the rage back then. What changed? A few pioneering individuals began experimenting with flashers and flies. What they discovered was that flashers were much more speed forgiving than dodgers, which allowed anglers to troll faster and cover more water. The flashers caused trailing flies to move more enticingly when pulled behind a rotator and they invoked vicious, aggressive strikes and sure, solid hookups from salmonids. The flies also produced an eerie contrast, glow and shimmer that couldn't be duplicated by plastic or silicone squids. Bottom line is that flasher and fly combinations just seemed to catch more fish. Now you don't see a Lake Michigan salmon boat without them!

Lake Michigan Downrigger Basics
Downriggers were invented on Lake Michigan. Manufacturers like Big Jon, Invader, Riviera, Cannon, and others can all trace their roots to Michigan's fledgling salmon program back in the late 1960's and early ‘70's. Downriggers were the brainchild of industrious anglers fervent with Coho fever who were experiencing the thrill of the first return of salmon to their planting sites, and the frustrations of not being able to catch them.
