Don't leave home without it!
Date:
This is my forth Garmin handheld (Legend, Vista HCX, Colorado) and it is the best yet! The touch screen makes this unit shine. Very easy to navigate through the different pages. It catches a signal within 15 seconds of power up. I spend way too much money on hunting gear each year, but this was worth every red cent. Very glad to own it.

Very Handy
Date:
First, this does eat batteries - especially in 0-15 degree weather....so bring a few extra sets in the pack. Even with 1-2 bars of battery life, the compass starts acting up. Buttons are rather tiny for large fingers....especially when naming way points. This could be resolved by providing a stylus that could slide into the unit. The screen is a bit hard to see in broad daylight but manageable with the right angle. It would also be nice to have a "temperature" feature as well.
Now for the good stuff. I picked up the 450T due to the 100K maps and was close to purchasing the 24K topos for the SW. I read a lot of reviews on the SW 24K (4 states: CO, AZ, NM, NV) and didn't look so good so passed. This unit drops you right back on target. I haven't used all the features yet but one specifically rocks. I didn't see the Sight "n" Go feature listed in the product descriptions but this feature alone is worth getting this unit.
I spotted game over a mile away in a small dead fall clearing. I was at a much higher vantage point an knew that when I dropped into the valley, it would be very difficult to find this clearing though all the trees. With the Sight n Go feature, you can study the topo map to see where you want to go and use the distance meter to estimate how far that cut is. You then point the Oregon's Sight n Go arrow the direction of your target. Lock in your direction, enter distance and you've now just projected a way point, which was Spot - On!
There has been multiple times in the past where I've spotted game a long distance away and have planned a stalk. If it's open country for Mule Deer or Pronghorn, it's not quite as challenging. However, in areas with thick timber, it's easy to lose sight of your target objective, especially when trying to keep the wind in your favor. I haven't played with all the features yet but am looking forward to trying out the Bird's Eye View.

Good But Not Great
Date:
First, I will comment that my Garmin Oregon has already saved one life. After tracking a hunting companion who was lost and doing circles in deep, dark heavy timber for close to 6 hours, I finally found him. He was totally lost, without a compass or GPS, soaking wet from rain and snow, and freezing as temperatures had dropped to about 29 degrees when I found him. Dark was only minutes away and flashlights were not going to help much when everything in that mountain timber looked identical. By the time I caught up to him, I would have been lost too, but for the GPS. It led us directly to the rides and we got out safely from an otherwise very dangerous situation.
Because the device works as specified it earns at least a Good. Several drawbacks keep it from earning a great. First, the color screen is difficult to read in daylight. Second, the touch screen is definitely first gen and difficult to calibrate if you have anything other than tiny fingers. Third, this little baby EATS batteries. I always carry two extra sets. It drains a set of AA's in about 6 hours if left on, even with the screen off. I would recommend the device, but if you are going to be counting on it to get you out of trouble I strongly recommend keeping several extra sets of batteries at all times,

Track management and updates
Date:
Nice GPS and nice topo map. The main reason I purchased this GPS was because of the preloaded topo and the tracks. After several hundered miles and days of riding I have learned this GPS lacks the flexability to manage your tracks. I have had several issues with this unit and through uploads was able to resolve the missing tracks and other issues. The tech support is good but they are limited with the amount of help. There needs to be more available memory for the storing of active tracks and not having to archive them would be more usefull. If you cover alot of groung on horse, jeep, or ATV the tracks are important when you need to know which way a trail leads.
