good safety net for distant hikers

got mine and realized that the spot had a recall. sent it in , got a new one in respectable time. tracker works great. shows a dot on a google-like map for my friends and family to see whenever it is on. marks every ten minutes. even has one way text for a small fee more. i use it to mark hunting spots, sign and what ever else when i am in the back country. upload the CD disks on a PC then load maps onto your GPS and you got typo maps with good detail at your finger tips. outstanding GPS. if ya got the money well worth it. CD's do not work on Mac's though. bummer.

Problematic

Just bought this. Got it home and set up my (required) contacts online. But it won't export the data from my computer to the unit. It requires a plugin download, but the link leads to "does not exist or is not available." I'm bringing it back and buying a sat phone.

Powerful Package

I frequently get out of cellphone coverage. I could not justify buying a Satellite locator beacon, where I may never push the trouble button. With the SPOT and the PN60 I can send text messages home from anywhere I travel. It works great. I found I am using the SPOT and PN in my car as well as on the trail. Using it on the road too, I really get my SPOT subscriptions worth out of it. I entered canned text messages like "Broke down call tow truck" . So if I cannot get cell coverage, my family can still send help. Point being It is very useful beyond the SPOT SOS emergency signal. If you like to text with your cellphone, this will really spoil you. I love it.
