Very realistic and easy to tie
    Date:
I was a little skeptical of this product at first, feeling it might be too much of a gimmick or too commercial (meaning getting away from the purity of tying flies). But I bought one package of the black stone flies because tying good legs and wing casings was a pain in the butt...took too long. I was shocked at how easy the soft shell bodies were to tie....and they look very very realistic. Honestly, they stand out in your fly box because they look so realistic.
    Some concerns I had initially:
Legs too stiff or hard plastic, making it difficult to tie and/or inhibit a good hook set. But I learned it's a soft rubber so the legs seem durable enough to last.
Attaching to fly. I never read instructions how to do it, just assumed you needed to tie it on. I wouldn't trust glueing it. I used the thread, full wraps across the top and around the thorax. I put a couple wraps between each of the legs. Pretty easy and looks good, even adds a little texture to the fly. The rubber will flex with the wraps, pulling it around the thorax. I would use dubbing vs something like chenille, simply to have a solid base for the body.
    Details of fly I tied:
    #8 5262
    Soft Shell - black, medium
I tie lead on the shank (Lg), one piece on each side, gives the flay a flatter look, like a real nymph.
    Black biot for tail (2)
Black Swannundaze or Ultra Lace for ribbing (M or L)
    Black dubbing for abdomen/thorax
That's it! Tie on the biot and ultra lace, build the abdomen, run the ultra lace for ribbing, build up the thorax and tie on the soft shell. The whole fly takes...3-5 minutes.
I just bought a few more and plan to play with them in different sizes/colors. Haven't fished with them yet, but can't see why they wouldn't do very well. They look very realistic.

    Great Realistic Stonefly!
    Date:
This product is the most simple way to tie extremely realistic stonefly quickly. Here is the recipe:
Hook - size 8 natural bend
Butt - small tuft of black dubbing
    Tail - black goose biot
abdomen - Black fine chenille (rib optional)
    Thorax- Black/sparkle chenille
    Wing case/head - Montana Fly Soft-shell stone.
Tying the soft-shell in is a little different so this is what I did; tie in the tail and abdomen like normal, then take your thread to the front of the hook and tie in sparkle chenille. Wind the chenille for the thorax back to the abdomen and tie off then add the soft shell. Once the soft shell is in place make two tight wraps just in front of the last pair of legs, two more tight wraps just in front of the second set of leggs and two tight wraps just behind the head. Then whip finish under the head at the hook eye.
