Can't wait to fish em
Date:
I got these a few weeks ago and finally was able to tie my first fly with them. The blades feel sturdy and I hope they will turn easily in the water. I was actually able to use the blade to push back the thread, because I built up too much thread which kept the blade from spinning. I expected it to bend with the force, but it held up fine. I hope I get to fish them soon. That is only reason for 4 stars since they are not proven yet.

Easy Spinning....
Date:
Used these in smaller sizes to make a series of dual-bladed spinner-type lures for trout fishing. The blades spin with the slightest of movement including water current alone. Just add a bead before and after the blades and stick a weighted body in between......

Propeller Fish Fly
Date:
I recently purchased a package of these small sized silver and gold propellers from Cabela's to recreate a "Propeller Fish Fly" in an attempt to mimic a pattern sold commercially. Some of our local fly club members have been successfully using this pattern to catch trout, bream, and crappie in the local waters near my home in Tallahassee, Florida.
One of our fly fisherman, in particular, has found the use of these "prop flies" indispensable for catching a strain of rainbow trout that a local surgeon puts in his small pond during the winter time. Our fly club members are allowed to fish for these trout using only fly fishing equipment. The fly pattern I tied up consists of the following:
1. Selecting a 4XL long, sized 6-8 streamer hook.
2. Placing a small copper, silver, or black colored bead head on the hook and allowing it to rest at the head (or against the hook eye) of the fly. This provides weight to the fly.
3. Slide on a silver or gold propeller, convex side forward, to ride gently up against the bead head at the head of the flky.
4. Place the hook into the tying vise slanted slightly downward. This keeps the bead head and propeller riding against the head of the fly while you place the materials on the hook shank.
5. Attach size 6/0 or 8/0 black tying thread a hook eye distance behind the propeller (always maintain this distance behind the propeller so it turns freely) and run the thread down to a spot directly above the point of the hook.
6. Tie a pencil sized clump of black marabou feathers
(measured the length of the hook shank) into the rear of the hook as a tail.
7. Tie in a small clump of Peacock colored Krystal Flash material at the tie in point of the marabou tail. Do not allow the ends of the Krystal Flash to protrude beyond the end of the marabou tail.
8. Attach a short piece of small diameter black chenille to the tie in point of the marabou and Krystal Flash.
9. Attach a small black feather dull side facing you (wet fly style) at the rear tie in point.
10. Place a short piece of small diameter silver wire at the rear tie in point.
11. Treat the materials at the tie in areas with a good head cement and allow it to dry for a minute.
12. Begin wrapping the black chenille forward to the point behind the propeller (remember not to crowd the prop or it will not spin freely).
13. Wrap the black feather hackle forward to the forward tie in point.
14. Over wrap the silver wire between the hackle fibers to the forward tie in point.
15. Secure the thread behind the propeller and whip finish it making sure the propeller still spins freely.
Now, go make up a bunch of these and fish them using a sinking tip fly line on a 5-8 weight fly rod and a 7&1/2-foot, 6-8 pound test leader tippets. The best methods seem to be to allow the fly to sink towards the bottom and retrieve it with slow, jerking line pulls. But, you experiment around using different retrieves and use the ones the fish tell you they like. Enjoy!
