Impressed by the Vexsis

I got a Ross Vexsis 2 reel in December with hopes to put it to work on a good day of midging on the South Fork. Unfortunately, sub zero temps never allowed for me to get out. On Christmas day I was packing for a January peacock bass trip to Brazil when the unused Vexsis caught my eye. I generally bring a light rod now matter where I'm headed so I matched it with my 5-weight Ross Essence FW fly rod and packed the outfit.

A 5-weight rig is not nearly enough for peacock bass, but I knew the Amazon would offer some less powerfull fish to test the reel on. As expected I used the outfit to catch numerous pirahna, sardinata and aruana up to 5lbs. Knowing it was bound to happen, I accidentally hooked about an 8 pound peacock bass. Peacock bass pull about as hard as any fish on the planet. The #2 Vexsis Reel drag slowed the fish beautifully and with some careful fish fighting tecniques and lots of luck I landed the fish.

The Vexsis reel is very impressive!
