These large-capacity boxes use patent-pending Vertical Friction™ Foam Technology to hold flies securely in place. Each box has a removable leaf for extra storage space and a waterproof gasket to keep the contents dry, even if it is dropped in the water.
Available:
Medium 3-3/4"L x 5"W x 1-5/8"H. Holds up to 238 flies.
Large 3-3/4"L x 6-1/2"W x 1-3/4"H. Holds up to 289 flies.
This box has two qualities that are just outstanding and better than any other box I've tried. First, the Vertical Friction Foam slots for holding the flies in place is wonderful, allowing you to put your flies in a slot even if you were blindfolded. The raised "peaks" guide your fly down to precisely the right "valley". Second is the box's outer latch system. I wish there was a better word to use than "great"! You could open this box one-handed if you had to; the latch system is strong and secure, and while it keeps the box's two halves tight and waterproof, it takes very little effort to open or close it. I have two small complaints: first, I agree with other reviewers that the internal leaves (which are simple to remove) are, with larger flies and flies with larger hackles in the main areas, best left out. This reduces the number of slots available about 30%, because the leaves also have foam slots, but you still have a great box that will hold many of your flies. My other small complaint is that these boxes are a bit bulkier than other boxes - 1/8" or so larger in depth. In my opinion, though, their bulkiness contributes to their soundness of design and longevity. All in all, this is a fine box which I believe most will be very happy to own.
I love this box. I have the medium box and it fits perfect in my vest pocket and it holds a lot of flies. I am going to buy a second one just for streamers and wooly buggers. I will take out the middle leaf for this box.
I have used lots of different boxes over the years - I have found this to be the one I like the best. It would be my "go to" box - especially for my nymph patterns.
I have only tried one other kind, but this one is 10 times better. It works great in the field. The only problem i have is what to do with the flies i change out.
