This is a non-toxic soft lead substitute that is 80% as dense as lead and will stick to your leaders. It hardens in water but can be softened in the warmth of your hand. 1-oz. tub. Available: Deep Soft Weight, Deep Soft Weight with Pin-on retractor.
I purchased this to use instead of split shot, which I feel weakens my line. I'll start with the good: It is certainly heavy and would get my flies down. The bad: It doesn't matter how heavy it is if it won't stay on my line. It falls off after a few roll casts. It is extremely messy and gets everywhere, in the summer especially. It is very sticky and doesn't come off my hands. I would definately NOT recommend this to anyone, buy tung fu putty instead!
I bought the Loon Deep Soft Weight thinking it is sink putty--it is not, so maybe this is all my fault. The weight came wrapped in paper inside a plastic container. Taking it off the paper, the stuff stuck to my fingers, and it took three washings with dish washing detergent and scrubbing with a paper towel to get it off. Still, I decided to try it on the river. The instructions suggest cooling the stuff in the river before using it. I did, but not long enough because it didn't stick to my line. It was gone after just one roll cast. Why would Loon make stuff like this? I was going to return it to Cabela's in exchange for Tung-Fu Tungsten Putty, but I dropped the container in the river and lost it. A Freudian slip, perhaps?
It sticks to your fingers when you try to apply it. It softens and gets all over your rod when you move along the stream, particularly in hot weather. It did not stick on very well, even when I used it around some split shot.
