I purchased this knife as an all around camp/survival type knife and it has been done that and more! The blade is pretty tough and is still easy to sharpen! It came hair shaving sharp right out of the box! I love the 'grippy' handle, the over molded rubber allows you to maintain your grip even when your hands are wet or bloody. I have used it to gut fish as well as a deer and it worked quite well! I also batoned wood with it and it did the job without fail! Haven't seen any chipping on the blade or tip, as long as your not prying with it or driving it into solid rock or something I don't think you could chip the blade or break the tip off? The sheath does the job of holding the knife in securely and has held up well to heavy use thus far. I was not a fan of nylon sheaths a while back, but have learned that they keep your blade drier in wet conditions than leather does and they don't retain water as long as leather sheaths do after they have gotten wet. I would go with this knife for a survival knife over the Bear Grylls knife which is also made by Gerber, the quality of the Big Rock is superb by comparison. Received the fixed blade version of the Grylls knife as a gift and it fell apart shortly after batoning some wood for a camp fire? I think the Grylls knife is just a marketing gimmick rather than a serious survival knife. If you need a tough all around camp/survival knife get a Big Rock, it will do the job!
This is a very nice knife for the money. Sharp out of the box. I may order another for a B.O.B., however it is slightly big for a gutting/skinning knife but not overly so. The grip is slim but I like it alot and should make for easy control.
The sheath is sort of odd but has poly inserts that the blade slides in.
The knife is great and exactly what you would expect from Gerber. The sheath is too long (hangs half way down to my knee) and the top of it lacks structure.
