This is the last hunting knife and caping knife combo you will ever buy if you do only two things: 1) follow the advice from the manufacturer and put oil on the blade when you wash it up, and 2) sharpen it the right way.
I've read a couple of reviews here that say they don't keep an edge. Folks, when you buy a quality D-2 steel knife and you sharpen it the right way, it will hold an edge for a very long time. Sharpening a knife of this caliber that is a full 1/4" thick requires time and patience, but done right, you'll have your buddies envy with jealousy. This knife set is the ultimate for whitetailed deer, mule deer, elk or any other big game. D2 steel gets sharp and stays sharp, but when you pay this much for top quality, don't you want to spend the time to sharpen it up properly so when you skin that deer in front of your buddies, they just go, "Wow?" This set of knives is completely awesome and will last a lifetime if taken care of, oiled and sharpened the right way. Good luck finding a better knife set. Thanks for reading.
I had purchased a pocket knife from Knives of Alaska previously, so I was aware of their high quality. In doing so I did had high preconceived expectations for the Light Hunter Knife Combo. I was not disappointed at all. This set is a must have for the serious hunter.
These knives aren't stainless. You cant rinse them and put them away like your other knives. You must clean them with soap and water, dry them thoroughly and oil them after each use or they will pit and rust. Kind of a bummer when you spend this much money on knives!
Great knife pair, but as was said, if you are not proficient at sharpening knives, you will have a tough time with the skinner. Using a controlled angle sharpener at a 17degree bevel angle I was able to sharpen this knife. It took hours, but this was the key. the convex shape and fat blade made sharpening otherwise impossible for me and several others who tried. the D2 tool steel makes for great edge retention, and otherwise the knife is a great design and very comfortable and reliable in the field. I have had the knife for almost 8 years now, and it looks as good as the day I bought it.
