Great for what I paid but would not recommend.

I purchased the 27 hp version as a clearance item. Because I got such a great deal on clearance with warranty I am happy with my purchase. My model had the original mounting/trim plate. The locking "pin" is a joke not matter if it is the new or old as they're the same. DO NOT trailer this motor without a transom saver in place. The locking pin failed as a result of poor design causing the motor to fall while trailering. This fall caused a weld to fail. After inspection of the weld it was deamed a "cold" weld. The weld looks pretty and strong from the outside but does not have good penetration into the base metal. It took 3 weeks to get a replacement part under warranty. I immediately noticed the new part was welded differently and the pivoting point of the bracket was redesigned. Overall I am happy with the performance. It is well built in every other aspect and they have since corrected the poor manufacturing practices since their first generation. If you have to pay list or sale price go with another brand. If you have mechanical and welding ability for the right price this motor can be a steal!

bad deal

We purchesed the 1860 Beavertail boat with the Vanguard 35 surface drive motor. The boat is awesome and well built. The floatation pods work great. The problem we had was with the motor. On the way home from picking up the boat, the locking pin rattled out of the trim tilt set up. The first time we used the boat, there was a short in the wiring that made the motor cut off. We were towed in by a passing boater. The second time we tried to use the boat, we could not get a full throttle to make any speed because the cable had come loose. The third time we used the boat, a weld on the trim/tilt broke and we were towed in. All of this happened in deep water, we never made it to the shallow flats. The motor was welded at a marine repair shop. We were told the aluminum weld was done wrong from the start. Fortunate for us Cabelas allowed us to return the motor for a full refund. We have since re-powered the boat with a different mud motor and are having a great time hunting the mud flats.

Advisement: 2011 Beaver tail Surface Drive Product Updates and Information

1. The proper engagement of the locking pin on the Beavertail Surface Drive Motors is critical during transport. Due to the weight of this type of motor, the locking pin prevents the motor from stressing the tilt/trim actuator and causing damage to the unit during transport. Improper engagement while transporting will result in damage to the actuator and weld assembly. The warning and requirement have been highlighted additionally in the owner’s manual.
2. All Beavertail motors include enclosed terminals and heat shrink wrap on all wire runs to limit exposure to metal surfaces and moisture. This additional feature significantly reduces wear points and wire exposure instances attributed to “shorting out” events.
3. Throttle cables are completely adjustable to control idle rev and govern top RPM. Dependant on use they do on occasion become loose and require adjustment over time and should be checked and adjusted periodically.
4. We had on occasion received feedback from the field on the Tilt/Trim bracket weld assembly presenting stress cracks. In 2011 we have revised our bracket and welding specification to eliminate these occurrences. We have also found these failures to directly correlate with improper locking pin engagement during transport of the boat and motor.
All Beavertail boats and motors are backed by a manufacturer’s warranty against defects and failures as noted above. If you have experienced any problems with your motor or boat due to a manufacturing defect please contact your dealer or Beavertail directly.

Go with a different brand

I bought the 40 horse surface drive with the 1860 Beavertail boat. On the way home the pin that holds the motor from bouncing bent and started to rip away at the motor housing because it is to soft. The paint job had air bubbles in it where the paint was chipping off the motor when i picked it up. The throttle was set so 60% of the throttle was pressed down before the engine would rev. I brought the boat out for a drive and the DRIVESHAFT to the prop busted. Had to pull my boat by hand 1/2 mile up river to nearest boat landing. The motor had less then 45 minutes on it and never touched mud, just plain water. I new I was taking a gamble buying this surface drive since they haven't been on the market very long. But I thought I would give it a try since their other motors had a good rep. I was wrong.
