When you want to stir the waters, tie on this Royal Wulff fly. This pattern combines the proven peacock and red color pattern of the Royal Coachman fly but adds a few modern improvements. It is tied with a bushier hackle for rougher water conditions and a calf tail wing for easy visibility and a good silhouette. Per 12. Sizes: 12, 14, 16.
I used the Royal Wulff on a small mountain stream in the rockies within the boundaries of the Weminuche Wilderness Area. This stream is a classic small stream. Riffles, small pools, bend pools, water falls - generally what you would exptect to find in an analysis of the perfect stream. I tied on a size 16 Royal Wulff purchased from Cabelas. I cast my 8 foot 4 weight using a 7-1/2 foot leader and 6x tippet. The Royal Wulff landed near the current seam and was drifted to a likely feeding area. I lost sight of the Royal Wulff, lifted my rod slightly and felt the tug of a feisty small stream brook trout. He struggled mightily but I was able to bring him to hand. a quick release and he was back under some rocks lamenting the fact that he had been fooled by a Royal Wulff - Strawberry shrotcake for trout. it is an awesome fly.
Great Fly! The fish on the Sauer River, on the German/Luxemburg Border, love these. I was getting hits from many different species. Paired with a good floatant, these will ride high on many drifts. This fly is a must-have. You gotta try it!
Some of the flies are uneven and the wings are crooked - they are about as good as I can tie them. But what the heck, they catch fish. For the price, not bad.
