It's Hopper Time

It's that time of year when grasshoppers make their appearance. These flies should be standard equipment for any fly fisherman trying to imitate a hopper. Used alone or with a hopper and dropper or hopper and copper (john, that is), they illicit a lot of attention from trout. Try treating your hoppers with Water Shed before use, they'll float longer. Another approach is to add a little sink solution so that the hopper just barley sinks, imitating a hopper on its last legs with no hope of recovery, sometimes this illicits strikes from educated trout. Also, pay attention to the color of the grasshoppers on your stream and "match the hatch."
