We did a nice trip at Isle Royale in Michigan and used the downriggers for 8 days of fishing. The first one broke after a 3 days of use and the other after 5 days. Like one of the other reviewers mentioned we needed to use bungie cords to hold the rigger in place when we they got to depth.
These downriggers might work fine with 3-5lb cannon balls but using 8-12lb balls puts to much stress on the device.
I did repair both but the repairs only lasted another day or so.. If you plan to use large cannon balls I suggest getting something better.
Bought three.....three failed.... within three days. Really stinks when you are 100 miles from civilization. Be sure to bring some bungie straps with you so you can still use them when the clutches fail. Better yet, upgrade to a different brand......
Purchased 2 for my Canada trips fishing for lake trout. They both worked good for 1/2 day until the clutch quit on one and we had to bungee it to keep it from freespooling. Went to Cabelas and got it promptly replaced before my next trip. Went up again and after two days either the original or replacement siezed up and we couldn't crank it up anymore. After a total of 3 days of fishing 2 out of 3 of them were junk. The good news is Cabelas took them back, no questions asked.
