best downrigger ever
Date:
I love this downrigger it work wonders at Flaming Gorge in Utah and Wyoming, had it down 105 ft down and had no problem raising a 10 lb weight up. Going to buy another one for my guest that go fishing with me. I have tried every downrigger out their and nothing can be compared with walker downriggers.

Great Downrigger
Date:
Well I have been out once with it so I will update in the future but my initial thoughts:
I love that this downrigger is feature packed with all the stuff the other guys charge you for as an addon: black box, auto stop, swivel base.
I love the auto down, after fishing a scotty manual for a year, I found it annoying to have to control the downrigger release as well as my reel spool at the same time... especially complicated when fishing two rods from a single downrigger.
This was not the case with the walker, hold the rod, flip the switch, stop 10 - 15 ft down, clip on another line release, hook up the second pole and flip the switch.
It really made it easy for me to drop both my buddies rig and mine while he was steering the boat.
When using the brake knob be sure to slowly turn it as to make fine adjustments. it is the clutch knob after all for small adjustments... the walker does just perfect with power down and no tangles.
One of the things I love is the people who say oh dont get a walker they use anodized aluminum booms... seems to me the other guys might be stainless steel but they use hollow stainless steel booms for weight reasons. The walkers are a solid aluminum boom meaning it will really take a lot to cause one to buckle. Maybe someone hitting a tree while driving down the road, or a kid thinking its fun to swing from the boom.
bottom line this walker made my fishing a brease, instead of worrying about manning my downrigger I was concentrated on manning my rod and reel.
And for those new to downriggers here is a tip: the harmonic hum that comes off the wire cable is a good thing, the noise attracts fish not scare them off, many pros like those over at salmonuniversity refuse to use braid or mono for this very reason.
Some people freak out thinking the hum would scare the fish, I did when I first heard it, it not only attracts the fish, but it is your signal when you are trolling at the right speed, keep adjusting the speed of your boat till you get the hum and dont use braid or mono.
I also was skeptical about the lack of information on this thing, while most of the reviews are from charters on the lake saying they would never use anything else, there was little information on people using them on saltwater here in the puget sound.
Well it performed great it the rough waters of San Juan Islands, and Anacortes, I am heading out this morning to troll humpy hollow / shipwreck out of the Everett marina.
It actually was much more solid than my manual Scotty, the scotty's plastic mounts flexed alot. While I was up in Anacortes, WA we suddenly went from 80ft to 30ft and started dragging, there was about a 120 degree angle on the cable from the drastic change in depth, we had a scotty ball snubber and even with the bouncing and dragging, the walker boom and mount did not flex at all.
We had installed the walker with the swivel mount, and used the deck plate as a backer under the fiberglass. We had to round off one of the corners of the deck plate before installing as our mount point was curved underneath.
What the walker does that none of the other brands do: Soft stop and Start... there is no jarring / jerking when starting or stopping it comes to a smooth stop.
Only improvements that could be done:
Ability for autostop to work when fishing two rods, you have to manually stop it then remove the clip then continue retrieving before autostop kicks in. This is because the autostop is based off a magnet that is attached to the wire.
Thermal overload built in like it is on the tournament series... if the autostop fails I would like to know that I am not going to loose my ball.
Ship with a second rod holder... the shipped mount supports two, so why not just include it?

Almost lost it all
Date:
Pros:
Nice, low-profile swivel base, smooth operation, good automatic stop function.
Placid line speed that is a joy to work with, as it doesn't jerk and yank your downrigger arm and base.
Appears to be soundly constructed, and the line counter matches the actual cannon ball depth fairly closely (within about 2 feet at 50 feet of depth).
Cons:
While lowering the cannonball with the brake knob, the knob spun off in my hand, then flew out of my hand and sank. This was quickly followed by having to grab the spool and try to stop a speeding ball from tearing off all the line and losing the ball, the line, and the spool.
Simultaneously, I had to put down the troll rod which almost flew overboard when I smacked the Walker rod holder while trying to save the spool.
This doesn't happen with Cannon Downriggers, as they have a nut on the end of the spool shaft so the brake knob can't fly off, thus preventing this unfortunate sequence of events.
I have an old Cannon Digitroll 2 that continues to function very well, and this Walker that will need modifications to keep from repeating this event.
I'll continue to seek out Walkers, but a phone call to their corporate offices to do some spleen venting is pending.

Kokanee King Love It
Date:
Good Morning
Placed the Electric Kokanee King on my 21 foot jet boat and love everything about it. Easy to install, works well in lakes at plus 100 feet, looks great on the boat and easy to take off and on. Been fishing a two rod combination off one rigger and can't wait to order and install the second one.
Not sure how this unit would work in the ocean as I have never used more than 10lbs on my unit. At deeper depths more weight is required to stay vertical.
