The jewel of downrigers, thank you Scotty!
Date:
I just purchased my 1099 and installed in no time. We went out and started fishing in picked up several lake trout that were too deep to catch befroe the downrigger. I would recommend this unit to everyone and enjoy the size and length of the unit!

Go ELECTRIC
Date:
I had never used a downrigger until a friend took me fishing in his boat that had two Scotty 24" electric downriggers. I got hooked in just one trip.
I ordered the Scotty 1099 from Cabelas and it was delivered in only 3 days as it was shipped from Colorado. When received, the down release handle was protruding from the factory box, but there was no damage to the unit or handle.
Installation on the boat is always a trick but the included mounting plate made the job go quite fast. In total it took me about 2 hours and this included the stringing of the electrical wires. Except for the electrical wire, fuse and holder, everything was included that was needed to get started.
After I installed the downrigger, I decided that a Scottie swivel mount would make things much safer and more convenient. While the swivel is not cheap, it is worth the expense.
I have used this downrigger with both 7 1/4 lb weights and 13 1/2 pound weights. The retrieval with both weights is amazingly fast and uses very little battery life.
The only con to the Scottie downriggers is the size and location of the rod holder. However, Cabelas includes its "quick draw" rod holder and this does make it easier to retrieve the rod when you have a fish.
On the positive, I do like the speed of the non-electric release to let the weight down. I also like the fact that it is belt driven so if there is something to break, it will be an inexpensive belt, rather than some gears that may be hard to replace.
I mounted my downrigger in front of the console so that I can easily watch my pole while I am steering the boat. I then use a leadcore line next to me so I have two lines out on the same side of the boat at all times, except for when I have to reel in two fish at the same time.
I am still trying to figure out the best depths and amount of line to use, but on my 3rd time out I landed a 17 1/4" rainbow trout.
I know that there are 2 or 3 other manufacturers of electric downriggers and I am sure that they are all fine pieces of equipment. My reserach showed that Scottie accessories are readily accessable and there is an extensive warranty repair network. I would, therefore recommend this downrigger to anyone who wants a downrigger and doesn't want to spend time and energy cranking up the weight.

very awkward
Date:
Theis Scotty was ordered to replace my old downrigger and it's very hard to get used to.
It takes up 3 times the deck space . Very hard to make everything else fit around it so now I have trouble getting in my boat on that side.
