I was nothing but impressed when I received these downriggers. I am new at this type of fishing but they are very easy to mount and use. The picture of these online does not do the Downrigger justice they are bigger then what they seem like online. Definitely recommend these downriggers they work awesome and are very rugged. And finally I can't leave out the awesome service at Cabellas as always.
Having used only electric down riggers on several boats, I was worried when I purchased these that I would regret not getting the electrical versions. However, after only a few outings with the manual versions, I'm pleasantly pleased, and I don't miss the electrical versions at all. The only time I see the electricals have a clear advantage is when you’re single-handing the back of the boat, and you hook a fish. At that point it would be nice to have the auto retract feature for pulling the weight up.
The quality, material and workmanship on the Scotty’s are very good. The ability to extend the long arms is helpful when turning the boat, especially if the down riggers are mounted any distance forward of the transom. This helps to prevent your lines from tangling with the prop and will allow you to make tighter turns.
You may want to have your down riggers mounted by a professional, however after a modest amount of study and thought, I decide to tackle the project myself. The assembly and mounting was easy enough for me alone, and required about 2 hours. It’s recommended you look at similar installations before deciding on your specific mounting location. Certainly check the back of your gunnels for wires, space and obstructions before drilling any holes.
All of the required hardware was included except for a backing plate. It’s advised to use a backing plate for strength (its amazing how much force can be applied to the gunnels if a ball becomes stuck). The 16-position swivel mount adds a level of convince, however, I have found that I only use the aft (stowage) or 90 degree position when trolling. The mounts do raise the down riggers a few inches, and this may or may not be desired for your installation.
The only negative I have discovered so far, is the retractable handle does not lock in the outer position. Because of this, sometimes during spirited retraction the handle seems unstable.
Note: I did not receive the free down rigger balls (?).
The cable breaks almost every trip out. I don't understand why they don't put on heavier duty weight cable like other manufacturers.. The lost gear is getting expensive. I'll look closer at the specs next time before I make a purchase.
