Great pricey setup
Date:
I've been using dual big Jon capt. Pals for over a year now trolling the finger lakes, and I'm quite pleased. Sure, they are a tad pricey, but you get a great setup with two rod holders, a rotating rig, and tip up booms. The tip up booms are the biggest thing-it really makes setup and resetting a breeze. The retrieval rate is fast enough, and after some oil on the pulled on the boom it's fairly quiet. If you can foot the $, go for it.

Big Jon Downriggers
Date:
I needed to add another down-rigger to my boat and it was an easy choice as to the brand I would go with.
I currently have an Big Jon Sportsman on the boat and added a new Captain's Pak.
The new Captain's Pak installs easily following the included instructions. The build quality is very good, everything fit and worked properly the first try.
The automatic weight up stop works perfect, nice option the old unit did not have. The weight cradle/rod holder unit is very similar to the old unit, rugged and very adjustable.
I have used the old unit for at least 15 years and it is as good as the day I installed it. I expect the new unit will give the same dependable service, all heavy duty aluminum and strong plastic pulleys and cable reel.
I used both down-riggers this morning and absolutely a pleasure to have the capability to run four rods now. My fishing buddies like them too. I have two Scotty and one Cannon unit on other boats, they all do the job, but I feel the Big Jon units are more rugged and user friendly than the others.

arms flexed too much
Date:
blasted off in a tournament and on the first wave the arms flexed and jumped all the balls from the holders and I lost a probe and 2 balls.
