This is a great trap... we have been using the tr101 box traps for the past few years with success and this one catches them 2 to 1. just drop a piece of chicken in the bait bag tie off to a dock or bridge and have crab for dinner!
I think these are cool traps. And, to be fair, I should at least take them out once before I complain. (!) But the fact is that these traps are not made for West Coast Dungeness crab; I think they are made for East Coast Blue crab. The entry doors are tiny. I think it would be thoughtful of Cabela's (or the manufacturer) to explain that the tiny doors on the Promar will serve to keep OUT all but the tiniest (illegal) Dungeness. In addition, in California at least, there is a required 4" escape hole (I think that's just a little smaller than the ENTRY holes on this one!).
Whatever it is, that dog don't hunt. At least, not out here in California. This product is totally unadapted to West Coast crabbing, even though I like the design and think I will use them for catching live bait. Or crawdads. Or spend a LOT of time retro-fitting them.
Maybe the product should only be sold on the East Coast.
(By the way, standard Dungeness commercial crab traps out here have openings that are 5X7").
