unstable on outfitter xl cot
Date:
the velcro straps that "attach" it to the cot leave the tree really unstable. Because of the angle of the bottom of the cot legs, the velcro straps slide up and will not hold the tree legs in place. you will never be able to hang a heavy coat on it unless you modify the way it is attached to the outfitter xl cot.
One reviewer suggested u-bolts - I'll try that and post how it works.

It is ok...
Date:
I bought this as part of a package with a GI cot. The design is poor. I don't think the holes in the cross bar were designed for the tree. I used the velcro to secure it to the cot, but it was way too flimsy. I would not want to have anything hanging on it, especially if I were to try and roll over while sleeping on the cot.
I did not want to drill into the tree or the cot. What I did was to buy 4 sets of U-bolts and I bolted the tree to the cross bar and the bottom of the legs. That seems to be the better way than using the velcro. Plus, I did not have to drill into my new cot.

Great product, but not quite 5 star

I agree with first reviewer-- this cot tree could be a few bucks cheaper or come with a bag, but it is still a very good product, and it will fit into the bag that my cot came in. Yes, the plastic holes liners were very tight, but once I worked the poles into one another, it was a great fit and believe that this will help the unit stay rigid over time. Also, my "velcro" straps were in excellent condition out of the box, so the other person probably had defective straps from the factory. However, I think that they will wear out within 3-5 years. This Cot tree has been reviewed in combo sets sold here at Cabela's and has gotten poor reviews because it is unstable and won't hold the weight of a rifle and/or coat. I have mine attached to a Cabela's Alaskan Guide model cot and the tree is SOLID. I think that stability of this tree has a lot to do with the cot design that it's attached to and how well the user attaches it. (wish pictures could be uploaded with reviews....)
If I ever buy a second cot for hunting or camping, I will buy another cot tree.

a little weak
Date:
The product concept is great. For the price I think it's a bit lame. First, when I got mine home, the holes for the crossbar were not quite large enough for the uprights to get through. As the store is 30 miles from my home I fixed it myself by filing out the holes to make them large enought for the poles to fit through. My second problem is with the hook and loop straps which come in the box to hold the legs tight against the cot. The straps are cheap multi-layers hook and loop. The two sides are stitched together, unlike "Velcro" brand. The two sides were already coming apart when I took them out of the box. My fix was to replace them with stronger, better quality "velcro" brand straps which are a little longer and wider and should hold and last longer. My last complaint is that it didn't come with a carry bag. Overall the unit will work well and is portable. I think they should either charge less or improve the product and supply a carry bag. If you're not willing to work a little on this product, I'd think carefully.
