Great and Horrible
Date:
I just used my Viper bore snake for the first time on my Ruger 10/22 and it didn't even make it through the barrel one time before the string snapped off. Felt like it was way to big for the bore to begin with. Yet I use one on my 12 gauge at least 4 times every weekend and it's perfect. I don't think I will trust even buying another one for the .22 . I would recommend the 12 gauge snake as it has worked for me flawlessly.

Viper Bore Snake (5.56/.223) Cord is Too Weak
Date:
I use the original Hoppe's Bore Snake for my AR-15's religiously. I saw this new 'Viper' model with more abrasive material on the FLOSS AREA and I purchased 3 of them. All three broke at the 'junction'.
I have numerous AR's, so I keep two at my bench and use one at the range. As most of you already know, you should keep both ends of the snake 'taught' as you pull it through the barrel in order to make the diameter of the floss "skinny" as it is pulled through. You have to do this until the 'new' snake is stretched out/compressed to the correct diameter of your barrel. Out of the box, the material is too 'fat' and you have pull really hard in order to get it through the bore, this risks breaking the cord. So, you really need to keep both sides of the floss as tight as you can for the first few passes through the barrel in order to 'season' the snake. The longer the barrel, the more this is needed. Pistols aren't much of a problem.
Anyway, I broke all three of the new "Viper" Bore Snakes. Even after trying to be careful after the first one broke. The beginning portion of the cord is much thinner in diameter and a lot weaker than the "Original" Bore Snakes. I'm gonna stick with the original 'Bore Snakes'.
