I bought this bait to see if I could catch fish other than catfish and I did. This bait works well . I caught 2 koi and 3 catfish. Koi are one of the hardest fish to catch: that's what I think anyway. The instructions say cover the entire points of the hook. That's not what I suggest. I leave the points exposesd to get the fish caught up. I could of have had mor fish but the fact that when the hook sharp points are covered up the bait just pops out along with the hook. You can use any type of hook with this bait. Just make sure your bait is secure around the hook, cast softly and keep the sharp points exposed. OH! One last thing. Didn't catch any fish with the bait sitting at the bottom of the lake. All my fish were caught using a bobber.
When I first tried it, I was only catching small catfish, nothing over 6 inches (of course I wasn't catching anything else with any other baits). Tried it again and I was catching some major carp, one possibly a master angler. It put up a good fight. Once the sun started going down, the channel cat started hitting it. The smallest one I caught was about 15 inches long. Like any other bait, the timing is what counts.
Was fishing in a canal and the bait lasted for about twenty miniutes before the hooks had to be rebaited. Used a treble hook below a egg sinker and molded it on firmly. Plan on buying more this spring when I start fishing again.
This season I have used three bait options for carp: corn, home-made dough or Uncle Josh's Strawberry. When one bait is not working, I try one of the others and have always had some success. On 10/1 nothing hit on corn or home-made dough, but this Uncle Josh stuff was a killer. Caught a 22", 25", 26" and 27" in 3 hours. I was sight fishing them, plopping the gob of Uncle Josh just out of their sight range and slowly bringing it back to where one was feeding and letting it sit. This stuff slowly dissolves in the water and the scent was bringing in 4 - 5 fish. On other occasions I have had these picky carp only go for corn or only home-made dough and ignore the other two. So, I have also had them ignore the Uncle Josh's. I blame the Picky carp. My advice: get a tub of this and bring it along.
