Shimano's Calais DC Casting Reel won Best of Show at ICAST 2006 in the freshwater reel category. This reel takes digital casting control to the next level. The 4x8 Digital Control® Braking System was thoroughly analyzed for mechanical and environmental conditions and the resulting design incorporated four new profiles: Extreme Distance X to allow for more than 50,000 RPM; Long Distance Mode L for most fishing applications; Accuracy Mode A for skipping and pitching; and Wind Mode W for casts into headwinds. These four profiles each have eight settings for a total of 32 different settings, which can handle just about any kind of fishing situation. Additional features include the Magnumlite aluminum spool, the Super Free bearing supported pinion gear system, the High Efficiency Gearing to allow for fast 7:1 gear ratio, at tapered titanium levelwind insert that makes it easier to thread the line and reduces friction during casting and the super smooth Dartanium Drag that is capable of generating 12 lbs. of drag. Both DC reels have 10 shielded A-RB anti-rust ball bearing plus one A-RB roller bearing.

I finally broke down and bought one of these reels. The first time I tried it , I didn't think much of it at all. I finally settled on 14# mono. This seems to work well with most of the baits I throw. Don't assume you won't backlash with this unit, you most certainly will. I agree with another review, there definitley is a learning curve. I've been using it now for almost two weeks and think I may have figured it out.It does cast well and is quality through and through.....would I buy another at that price? , probably not. I believe my money would be better spent on three Curados. I am very anxious to try it down on ElSalto. That will be the real test.

OK, I\u2019m a skeptic, so sometimes I have to be shown. Since I didn\u2019t know anyone who owned a Shimano Calais DC baitcasting reel, I decided to purchase one and see for myself. Could this seemingly innovative reel actually help me cast more successfully and consistently, I wondered, or is it just another example of the technological one-upmanship that bombards most of our lives these days?
Over the years, I\u2019ve been more of a fly-rod and/or spinning reel user. This Shimano reel is only the third baitcaster I have owned. (Well, the fourth if you count the old relic that my father gave me. It came with a lifetime guarantee\u2014ie. guaranteed to backlash on nearly every cast.) So overall, I figure I\u2019m still an amateur at baitcasting, at least by most dedicated fishermen\u2019s standards. Until recently, I thought bait casting was mostly for professionals and maybe a few non-pros who loved trouble. But, during the past year of patiently practicing, I\u2019ve become a more competent user of these newer and better palm-sized reels, plus I\u2019ve even caught a few bass along the way.
Without jumping into the running debate on line preferences, I spooled the reel with some 12-lb copoly. From the very first cast, in my back yard with a 3/8 oz practice weight, I knew this was a different experience. I started with the L-7 setting, as recommended in the manual. After a few casts, I switched to the L-4 position. I saw no evidence of backlash and I was consistently able to get more distance with 12-lb line on this reel than I can normally get with 8-lb line on a conventional bait-caster. On the open water, this reel is a true joy to use. The more I use it, the more of a believer I become. Will it help me catch more fish? I doubt it, but it sure makes trying to catch them more fun.
Is this reel worth the money? Well, I guess that largely depends on one\u2019s priorities. Some individuals go to Vegas and plunk down the equivalent of what this reel costs and they come away with nothing to show for it. To me, that somehow makes the cost of any quality product more easily justified.

THIS IS THE SECOND CALAIS DC I'VE BOUGHT. BEING A ONE ARM FISHERMAN I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE LURE CONTROL I GOT WITH MY FIRST REEL. SET-UP IS EASY AND RESULTS ARE EXCELLENT. IT'S A BIT PRICEY BUT WELL WORTH IT.
