Starting to grow on me
Date:
I own the 300, and I wasn't super happy with it for the first few uses due to a rattling noise in the left side of the reel. After taking it apart a few times and messing with the clicker, which I thought was the problem, I finally noticed that a retaining clip for the spacer on the left side plate was sticking out and occassionally rubbing on one of the plastic gears. I pushed the spacer all the way in and fully engaged the retaining clip, all good now. The drag is just okay in terms of smoothness, so I'm going to upgrade to Carbontex next. One nice thing I noticed during my dissassembly is that this reel actually has "dual" anti-reverse, the one-way bearing and a silent back-up pawl under the main gear - a nice unadvertised feature. Considering the drag and small gears, I think this makes a nice 15-pound monofilament reel, and would probably be fine with 20 if needed. I use mine for salmon in freshwater/estuary, and shallow water jigging in the ocean, works great for both. I like it better than the ABU BCX series, but not as much as the ABU C-series.

D-U-R-A-B-L-E!
Date:
ive had this reel for about six years, and i have beaten it apart; and yet... it still works! it doesnt cast as smoothly as it once did, but it was a terrific buy. its even been shot with a ricochet'd bullet on its side-plate and it still functions perfectly. i would definiteley suggeste it to someone whos looking to be fishing with bait more than buzzbaits, plugs, etc.

Quality Reel
Date:
I was looking for a quality all metal baitcasting reel so I bought the larger 300L model about one year ago. Now that I have a season on it. This is how it worked out for me.
Rather than just stating that it is great and I like it. Here are some numbers to go along with that.
Using 14 pound mono filament line on a 6 1/2' Cabelas Fish Eagle II rod. I have the tension knob of the reel at its minimum setting without the spool having an side to side free play. Using a 3/4 ounce lure I get a distance of 100 feet without any back lash at all. The centrifugal brake on this reel works better than the magnetic brake on some of the more expensive reels that I have used.
A lighter more flexible line than what I am using such as Stren original or Trilene XL would have to do even better.
Using 30 pound braided line on a 6' rod with 3/4 ounce lure. I can cast to a distance of about 90 feet without any backlash.
The reel is smooth and it is an all metal reel that looks and feels like a quality product. It is of course about 3 or 4 ounces heavier than a low profile reel. It is rated as a medium heavy to heavy reel. Just about all of the low profile baitcasters are rated at medium.
With the large amount of line that it holds it is also works well for trolling. The clicker that can be turned on or off is also a nice feature when trolling or still fishing.
I guess that using a baitcasting reel takes some getting use to. I do not give it much thought since I have been using bait casters all my life. When I cast I naturally put pressure on the spool with my thumb when the lure has traveled as far as it is going to travel. I have tried out and returned some low profile reels this year that my thumb could not prevent a backlash on. That was on reels with the magnetic clutches set to maximum. So the difference is the reel and not how I use my thumb.
If you are really wanting the distance on a cast. You can also put a good spincast reel on your casting rod to accomplish that. I always take a spincaster on every fishing trip. The good quality spincasters such as the Abumatic, a Johnson Century or the Zebco Omega do very well with minimal line twist. I am sure there are lots of other good ones that I have not used.
Any reel requires periodic maintenance and it must be properly lubricated. When you get any new reel. Do the maintenance on it first. If you are not mechanically inclined to do this yourself. Send it out to a reel shop. Most problems that people experience with new reels is a result of lack of lubrication from the factory. My 300L was OK when I got it. Checking this out first can prevent some aggravation later.
