    functional design

This Dutch Oven is as good as it gets. Of course, I have never seen a bad Dutch Oven.
Dutch Ovens are so versatile that cooks who use them love them. I was at a party a few nights ago and the conversation turned to Dutch ovens. Enthusiasts were talking about a kitchen houseware!
Anyway, when it comes to Dutch ovens, there are two basic designs; the campfire design with the three legs and the flat top, and the kitchen design with the flat bottom and the rounded top.
Ideally, you could get a flat bottom Dutch Oven with a flat top. Here is why: The campfire design has three legs supposedly so you can have coals under the Dutch Oven. These legs on a heavy cast iron pot will poke holes, scratch, and damage nearly anything you put them on top of. I never found these legs to offer any real advantage over just placing the Dutch Oven on the coals or using three stones as legs. So, the kitchen designed flat bottom is more practical even at camp.
The flat lid is preferred over the round dome type lid because you can put coals on the lid to truly use it as a Dutch "Oven".
This model has the preferred flat bottom, and the top is flat enough that you could put coals on, but not quite as perfect as if it were a real flat topped camp design lid.
Bottom line is that this is a good compromise between a traditional kitchen Dutch Oven and Campfire Dutch Oven.
