After years of canoeing I bought a kayak
Date:
This Old Towne is a great kayak for fishing. I've had it on several mountain and NE Colorado lakes as well as the South Platte River during high flow. It handles great in both types of waters. I've been whitewater kayaking before and this kayak is very stable compared to those kayaks, although I would'nt try to stand up in it. My first fishing trips led me to modify my kayak for easier fishing. The kayak comes with a rope "pulley" system so that you can move the anchor from the side to the back of the kayak. I moved this pulley system so that the rope now goes from the middle to the front of the kayak. Now I'm facing the wind and can see bigger waves coming. I put a clip on the end of the rope so that I can interchange my anchor for my drift sock (Cabelas) so that I'll be facing the waves while drifting in whitecapped lakes. I bought a mushroom anchor (Cabelas) to replace the one provided since it wasn't keeping me anchored while even on light wind lakes. I put two extra pole holders (Cabelas) in the front of the kayak, just in front of my feet, one on each side. It makes it much easier to watch and handle the poles when they're in front of you instead of behind you while trolling or drifting. I set the rod holder angle so that I would'nt hit the poles while paddling. I practiced entering the kayak after flipping it and found that it still manuevers when its 1/2 full of water although its tipsy. I bought a kayak emergency kit: whistle, water pump, paddle float and leash to take care of this occurance. Although its light, its awkward to carry so I got a kayak trolley to make it easier to get from the parking lot to the lake. I wished I lived closer to a lake so that I could use it more often! My daughter and son have tried it and like it better than a canoe. I see more kayaks in our future!

Good for Beginners
Date:
I am relatively new to kayaking, but wanted to get a kayak for fishing. I found this kayak to be a great one to start out with as a beginner. It does tend to feel a little wobbly at first, this goes away after a few minutes when you get used to it. It is very stable, and easy to paddle and cast out of without having to worry about tipping over. A nice little storage compartment in the back is reachable from the cockpit. Only complaint is that the anchor that comes with it tends to get stuck on the bottom easily, and you have to get it free.

Great little kayak for the money
Date:
This is my 3rd kayak and it is really great for fishing. I took this on a flat, open lake that is know to get rough when the wind comes up. This kayak is very stable and when a front came in and the 14 and 16 foot aluminum V bottom boats started heading for the marina I paddled out further for another drift. I'm not saying that you should be in the middle of the lake in 3-4ft swells but this little baby handled the whitecaps just fine. Had a great day and 11 walleyes (cpr) later I headed in. It has a large cockpit for easy access in and out. It's light. I throw it on the roof of a small car. Oh did I mention I weigh in at 275. A great little yak!
