The Sidesaddle electric motor mount attaches to the gunwale anywhere on the canoe making it more comfortable to operate the motor while looking forward. Installation and removal is quick and easy. The Sidesaddle can also be adjusted for right- or left-hand operation.
I purchased this mount for my 14" Old Town "Sportsman" canoe. This canoe is marketed under several names for Old Town , like "Rockport" so check their website if you're not sure who makes yours.
I gave it two stars because it requires customizing your canoe or the mount before it works well. It's not bad but its definitely not great and for the money, there are better solutions available.
Once installed, it does a fair job of gripping the gunwale but the gunwale moves, so when you engage the motor, it feels like it will pull the mount and gunwale right off the boat.
I do not recommend this for mounting a motor to your canoe. A better design would include a stiffer mounting system (side of the canoe) or across the entire canoe to distribute weight.
I'm only keeping mine because the mount does come in handy for my mini trolling rig. Even still, it seems a bit more flimsy than I'd like.
I am using this rugged and versatile motor mounting device for an electric trolling motor on the side of a Gruman Sportboat (15 ft. long). This design will work on either side of a craft like mine or a canoe. I am using two C-clamps and a piece of plywood to further stabilize this motor mount's attachment to the gunwale.
I'm a newbie to motorizing my canoe. I had read the reviews of this motor mount prior to purchase, so i knew I might have problems. At first it worked perfectly. When lifting/leveraging the motor from shallow water however, the mount disengaged as a result of that added strain. I had a lot of trouble getting the mount to get back to where it was before. Perhaps part of the gunwale warped when the mount first twisted off. Obviously some juryrigging is necessary, but I knew this was going to be the case going in, and it appears to be the only one of its kind (at least to a newbie like me). It was such a pleasure to get this lil Minnekota 30 chugging the canoe right along, that i was content to get this far.
