Lowrance HDS
Date:
I purchased a HDS-5M about 4 months ago and have not been pleased with it at all. My purchase was made a month before a big planned trip was scheduled. With my unit installed in the dash, the internal antenna more times than not would not see enough satellites to work properly. After getting the external antenna kit, it worked for a week and then would not recognize the external antenna on the network. I sent the external antenna back to Lowrance and told them about my scheduled trip in 3 weeks. It took them 2.5 weeks to test my unit only to find out that the antenna is in good working condition. They could not next day air the part back to me and they also would not next day air a replacement cable and T connector. Needless to say, my large investment for my planned trip was worthless thanks to Lowrance. Now that I have a new cable and T connector, the system has worked well for a few months. Every 10th time booting up the system, it will have an issue seeing the external antenna.
So from what I know now, I'd give up the HDS part of the Lowrance unit and o back to the Globalmap units instead. They were pretty much bulletproof and had none of the issues that I have had with this unit. I just need to sell off what I have now and go back old-school. Sometimes the new products just aren't as good as the old stuff.
