Where's the FISH ???
Date:
Two weeks ago I installed the Elite 5 unit on my boat with the 83/200 transducer. After trolling for 6 hours, I think I saw two fish on the screen,, I think. This unit replaced a 1980's King 1060 paper graph, that killed more battery's than auto accidents! The King paper graph showed me fish always in the traditional "arch", no doubt about it, there was a fish on the screen. Taking the Elite 5 out in the same areas showed nada, nothing, zip, ZERO. I called Cabelas and ordered the Elite 5 DSI Combo with the 455/800 transducer. I removed the Elite 5 from the boat when the Elite 5 DSI came via UPS. Sure the DSI has a good view of the bottom, BUT I want to know where the fish are hanging out, how deep, what depth is comfortable for the salmoniods? When a fish did show,,, all I could see was a dot the size of a pin head,,, THAT's a FISH? I thought,,, I never did see a mark on the screen that I could confidently say THATS A FISH !! Depending on the angle of the sun, the "color" your using on the screen, this tiny dot is easily missed when your doing the 1000 other things on the boat. I found the basic white background is best for spotting fish,,, I think,,,. I'm not sure if I'm going to find another unit, or give this one another week end to see if it's just me, or some setting I have yet to find that shows me more fish on the screen. The manual isn't worth the paper used to print it on, your better off to just turn it on and push some buttons to see how it works. It's Really easy to understand but some basic advise in the book would have been helpful, like the contrast settings, and MORE details about this "advanced" piece of technology. The next thing I didn't like was it's ability to follow the bottom by itself, every twenty foot of bottom change required you to make some 5 or 6 keystrokes to get the bottom back into view. There's no simple up or down by 10 feet bottom adjustment. Here in New England where very few lakes have a smooth bottom, this is a royal pain in the backside! I guess the people who designed this never went fishing,,,,! The GPS unit seemed OK, but it doesn't hold a candle to my Garmin 521s, I require more detailed information on bottom depth changes than the DSI GPS showed me, again maybe it's me not understanding the unit well enough? My 1st thought as to why this unit doesn't show fish on it very well is because of the narrow sonar beam only hits the fish under the boat for a split second. And the other thing I've found,, the narrow beam will not see my down rigger ball weight, not good when fishing a UN-even bottom, you have to REMEMBER where your weights are,,,, and yes I got hung-up because of this forgetfulness. While this might be great for finding stuff under the water's surface, it is a poor fish finder tool IMHO

Works as Advertized
Date:
I installed this unit in my Father in Laws16ft Alumacaft boat. The unit installs easy and is easy to use.
Work great in 3-4ft of water showing detailed weeds just 1-2ft below the boat. Proper setup is a must.
1st the unit must be in advance mode, and in shallow water mode.
Then in shallow water (below 10ft) the Surface Clarity setting should be set to high, and the Noise Rejection should be Med to High.
As you get over 10ft of depth then the Surface Clarity and Noise can be set to Low or Off that way you retain the detail of the image.
As far as contrast adjustment 45% to 65% works good. Think of it as adjusting the contrast of a black and white TV. You use this setting to adjust the brightness of the objects you are looking at to see better.
Also speed is important. 3-5mph seems to be a good speed to get quality reading.

Good mapping, poor sonar
Date:
The GPS mapping works great, but as a sonar the screen is so cluttered you can not make out any details.
User manual does not go into enough details and covers to many units.
Base of unit seems cheap and feels like it wants to break when you release it from the head unit.

research before you buy
Date:
unit does not perform like it is described in catalog. In shallow water screen is full of clutter and you cannot determine what you are seeing. Definitley not picture perfect and it does not mark fish clearly. i would not recommend it .
