798 CI SI, PC Interface & Memory card suggestions
Date:
The owners manual is very thorough and complete with many references to the Humminbird web site where more detail and videos can be found. Installation instructions are also very good.
I was up and running in almost no time and with the help of the owner's manual was finding Side Imaging structure and saving coordinates for ice fishing use. The interaction between the sonar and the GPS is just great. Mark a point of interest on the SI/sonar and it creates a waypoint on the GPS including depth information and coordinates. All this can be downloaded to a PC via an SD memory card.
I saved money by buying an SD to UBS adapter as well as a 2GB SD card at a discount store.
I am disappointed with the fact that the sonar conversion software is not compatible with Windows 7. Also, the 798ci SI to PC adapter kit is only for a PC with a DB9 connector serial port, not a USB port. An additional DB9 to USB adapter is required to complete the connection (also available much cheaper at discount house than from Humminbird). Overall, I am very pleased with this combo system.

The 798 ci is an excellent gps/fish finder combo for any style of fishing. For the money, you will not find a better unit. Easy to use, excellent clarity, precise and accuarate right outta the box! Outdoes the competitors hands down. Wish I had went ahead and dropped another grand and got the larger screen though.

798CI SI NVB
Date:
I've had my 798CI SI NVB since 6/09. It's been a great depth finder to get my feet wet on SI. It has never given me any trouble at all and it's been fished on hot days, freezing days, rainy days, etc. The internal GPS antenna performs very well and the update/refresh rate is great. Puts me right on the spot!
The latest software release for it from Humminbird (version 4.7), which is free, really improved it's performance as well as adding some new functions. It now really paints some great 2d pictures with the classic fish arches you'd expect, shows my smaller jigs well even at 25+ feet with the Switchfire setting and I like the new color palette 4.7 brings, as well. The NVB bundle is nice for the lakes I fish as they don't change much, but it is the 2006 map sets.
I recently purchased a 997C SI and the wider screen is nice, especially for the SI detail. But the 798 is a great unit in it's own right for sure.

Humminbird 798 CI SI with NVB
Date:
I have had mine about 2 months and haven't had time to fully use all the features but it is everything I hoped for. It is very easy to use in basic mode. I am gradually reading the manual and making some changes to fit my needs better. Can't say I fully appreciate or have benefited from side imaging but I think after I get the hang of it and get range dialed in it will be an asset. I have used in on Green Bay and Wisconsin inland lakes. Maps are great. Screen is bright and easy to use in bright sunlight. I would love to have a larger screen but then more money and I couldn't spin it around so I can read it from both steering wheel and front chair. I have a center cockpit bay boat. Plan to use it in Port Charlotte this spring and will really test side imaging for looking under docks for snook. Had occassion to use customer service because maps were not loaded correctly initially and was pleased with the experience. I would buy the unit again and certaily recommend it to friends.
