The five "grabber" prongs on the base get a quick hold on your location while the centrally weighted shaft gives plenty of drag to keep you solidly anchored over your favorite fishing spot. I have used this anchor in many fast river currents in the spring, and have seldom had a problem. In fact every once in a while would grab a little to well and stop me dead with a jolt. To those who do have a problem try letting out extra rope this anchor is designed to be dragged on bottom not just set on bottom. Any time I have had a problem I let out 35'-50' of rope and it would hold just fine. I fished in 4'-12' of water with 8-10 mph currents with a 16' deep vee..
The Richter anchor is by far the best anchor on the market today. I have an 18' Skiff and use the 18# Richter anchor. I have read reviews that say it will not hold in the wind and strong current. If you will use enough rope it will hold. You can't drop it straight down and expect it to hold. It is designed to be put out with plenty of rope and then pulled over on it's side so it can dig in. I have 2 on my Skiff with 150' of rope on each. I can anchor over a brush pile and set there as long I wish no matter how strong the wind or current.
I recently aquired 2 of the 25 pound anchors with the purchase of a 18' jet boat. I figured that because of their size and shape that they would work excellent in relatively fast moving water. Even in relatively slow water both of them were unable to hold my boat. I have been unable to purchase an anchor that is effective for this purpose. They have been replaced (for rivers anyways) with two 75 pound steel I-beam pieces with teeth welded to them, which work well in all but the fastest moving water. I just wish I could find an anchor that could handle moving water but didn't require a crane to lift it back into the boat. Any suggestions? They work quite well in lakes but I would definitely not recommend them for rivers.
I catfish on the Ohio River and this anchor grabs and holds in any condition, any bottom type. A bit expensive but worth it not having the aggervation of trying to get other types of anchors to hold. A+++++
