Excellent On-Board Charger
Date:
I had some doubts about this unit at first. Picked one up at the Cabela's Maine store in the morning and was on the water that afternoon. As far as installs go, it was relatively painless. The purple wire you read about was not that big a deal. You just need to be sure you are connecting to the correct side of the ignition wire (volt/ohm meeter works good for this). I only have a 75 hp Merc, so was concerned that the alternator would not put out the amps you need for it to charge properly (make sure you check this as it is important) , however minimum for the 2-DC is only 25 amps and my 75 hp (4 stroke EFI) puts out 50 amps so we were golden. I am keeping my boat at a marina that does not have power on the dock so it was a pain pulling the batteries and taking them back to camp to charge them each night. I was looking to the DC-2 to help give me more then one day of use on the water. Well, it keeps my 24 volt system charged well. We can go the whole weekend now. Only reason I gave 4 as opposed to 5 stars is the way Minn Kota decided to fuse the wires. The fuse holders are bulky so I had to cut two off to be able to snake the wires to one of the batteries. The fuze holders were easy enough to attach back with a the appropriate clip and a little shrink wrap (available at any hardware store.) Well worth the expense and time to install.

Purple Wire Problems
Date:
Despite having read the other reviews before buying a single pole inverter, I still had problems finding a good connection for the purple wire. A must is that both the green light and the yellow light have to be lite up before the trolling battery will charge. I had two "bad" fishing trips because I did not understand this. I connected to a wire that was hot only with the ignition switch on per the instructions. The "charging trolling battery" light would illuminate but the green on light was not on and the battery would not charge. I finally had to connect the purple wire to a toggle switch which is connected to a permanent "hot" wire. So to charge my battery I have to remember to flip the switch while using my 125 HP motor. I have yet to have a successful day using the charger but I hope it will work next trip out. Also realize that you have the option of a single pole, double pole, or tripple pole inverter. Buy the single if you have one auxillary battery, two if you have two batteries besides the starting battery and three for three. I thought I was getting a "better" charger by buying the double pole and had to return it for the single pole because I have one trolling battery to charge not two.

Minn Kota On-Board DC Alternator Charger
Date:
Earlier reviews tak about where to connect the purple wire. I connected it to the terminal on the back of the tackometer that has a purple going to it. It was easy and fast.

Onboard Engine Output Charger
Date:
The alternator charger keeps my trolling batteries charged, after fishing 10 - 12 hours on the weekend.
I keep my boat in the water at the lake on the weekends. I do not do a great deal of running with the big motor. I run the outboard 10-15 minutes twice a day. I run a 24V Minnkota 74 Maxxum and have never had a problem with the batteries running low since installing the onboard alternator charger.
I have used the Dual Pro Extra II and it is just as good.
I pull the boat out and top the charge off with a Dual Pro SE onboard charger when I go home.
Caution !!!....if you ever need to jump your starting battery from one of the trolliing batteries, make sure to disconnect the alternator charger first.....
