I bought this cheap pump thinking that I would save some money. Well, it cost me money. Because now I have to go out and buy another pump. It lasted me two years and I hardily used it. When I did use it the wire insulation was cracking and it would go in and out. I would recommend spending the extra $10 and buy a Rule, Attwood, or Mayfair. I now have a Mayfair, and I have friends that have had Rules and Attwoods that have worked for years. I have gone down in a storm before, and a cheap pump played a part in it. Trust me, don't be cheap with such a crucial tool (and carry a back-up)!
After hooking up the pump and switch I poured water in the boat to test the switch. It worked fine. A couple weeks later I left my boat tied to a dock overnight. I woke up to thunder, lightning and an intense downpour. Thought about checking the boat but that's why I bought the auto switch right! In the morning I went out and found my boat almost sunk. I carefully climbed in, reached down and tapped the switch causing it to kick in. I don't know why it didn't work on it's own but I have no faith in it now.
Although I did not use this pump in a boat, I did have use for a small automatic pump to keep the closed in area around my water line that runs up from the ground into my Mobile Home dry. I connected the pump to a 12V Battery Pack, and the charger for the battery pack to a 110V outlet. The unit works real well. One more use for a Bilge Pump.
