i keep worms all winter in my basement give em lots of dirt and feed em rolled oats and rotten lettuce change dirt about every 2-3 weeks and keep em in a cool spot, works for me.
I have ordered these nightcrawlers at least 10 times over the past few years. I have had very few, if any, dead on arrival. As with any live bait, you have to work to keep them alive. I swap ice packs daily or every other day if the weather is warm. In cooler weather I just keep them as is.
We use all of them within a few weeks, so they usually all stay alive for that short time. I would use the other suggestions (feed them, mix peat moss, bigger container) if I were keeping them longer.
TO BUY THESE AS BAIT FOR THE SEASON IS PROBABLY NOT A WISE INVESTMENT. WE BUY THEM AND WITHIN A WEEK, TAKE THEM TO CANADA FOR WALLEYES AND IT WORKS OUT GREAT. I KEEP MY CRAWLERS AT HOME IN REFRIGERATOR IN VARIOUS WORM FARMS. WORKS IF YOU FISH ALOT AND ROTATE WORMS. WATCH NUMBERS PER CONTAINER CLOSLEY AND REMOVE SICK/DEAD WORMS ON A REGULAR BASIS.
I have purchased these worms many times over the past 2 years. At first I also had problems keeping the worms long term. I found mixing the soil with peat moss helps. Also finding something they will eat is crutial. Worm begging never did any good from my experience. Also must keep them cool. I continue to use the box they come in and swap out the ice packs daily. It takes a lot of effort to keep them alive but it is worth it. As far as the quality of the worm received from the supplier, they are very good.
