A #1 three-way swivel and sinker connector, 3/0 saltwater hook and a 2" fluorescent red float are tied on tough 60-pound monofilament. Just add sinker, water and fish. Also works great for Sheepshead, Trout and Drum. Per 5.
Having not fished off a pier in 30 years, I had forgotten how. So I searched my Cabela catalog's for saltwater fishing gear and came across the Redfish Rig. At first glance, I knew that was what I would be ordering. And a GOOD decision it was! The smart thing about this rig is that it floats your cut or live bait off the bottom...making it less likely that a crab will come along and silently leave you with a bare hook. I fished with both a bottom rig and the Red Fish Rig, and the latter out-fished the bottom rig 3 to 1. The crabs were out there stealing bait(s) like bandits - all up and down the Cherry Grove Pier. But me...I was catching not only Red Drum, but Spanish Mackeral, Whitings, and even a huge stingray. It was hard to guard the area next to me using this rig. People saw me catching fish when they weren't, and that was all the encouragement they needed to cast (near) where I was casting. Even so, I still out-fished them 3 to 1. The weight that comes with this rig did really good. However, if winds of 20 mph or greater are present, you may have to attach another small pyramid weight to it. But for 2 ~ 3 ft waves, it held it's own nicely. Yes...I would recommend this item to a friend. I already have to my brother who is going to the beach in June. If you do get some of these, be sure to take your camera with you on the pier... Need I say more?
