Great Lure with Weak Link
Date:
Do these tube lures attract Barracuda? You bet they do! I first discovered these about 8 years ago, before making a trip to Belize. I had never fished for, or caught, a Barracuda and I thought these lures looked pretty strange, but I had read an article about how well they worked for Barracuda, so I decided to give them a try. I purchased two packages. One in red and one in green.
We had gone to Belieze to fly fish for Bonefish, but we took along spinning gear too, for whatever else we might have a shot at catching.
We begin to see quite a few Barracuda as we made our way through the mangrove channels, and across the flats, and so I tied on one of these tubes, with a braided wire leader between my mono line and the lure.
We soon saw a large Barracuda suspended in the shallow water, perfectly still. It was difficult to see, and blended into the bottom perfectly, but I was fortunate enough to have been looking in the right place and sighted it.
I launched the tube lure, sending it well beyond, and in front of, the fish. I had read that the lure should be retrieved as quickly as possible, so I began to reel as fast as I could. The lure made a spiral as it moved rapidly though the water, and I watched the Barracuda as the lure approached. At some point, I saw the fish suddenly turn slightly toward the lure, that was now some 10 feet in front of it, and suddenly it exploded in the shallow water and was on the lure in a heart beat. It was an amazing strike, and to make a long story short, after a long run and many leaps out of the water, I landed a really large "Cudda." This was my first, but not my last.
Since this trip, I have had many more similar catches at other fishing destinations, and these lures have been equally effective while trolling the lure in deeper channels.
Now, the down side.
I lost many of these fish, due to a "weak link" in the lure construction.
A single strand of wire is attached to the large ball swivel, and then runs through the tube where it is attached to a trebel hook about midway down the length of the tube. This hook is attached, by simply running the wire through the eye and making a twist. The wire then extends down the tube, to the bottom, and another treble hook is attached where the tube's tapered tail begins.
The tube lure has a purposefully built in curve to it, which makes it "spiral" in the water. This is a great action for attracting the Barracuda.
The "down side" is, the center hook method of connection creates a "weak link" in the lure. By running the wire through the hook, and making a twist, it creates a weak spot in the wire.
I have lost many large Barracuda, due to the wire breaking at this junction. I'll never be convinced that these fish "bit" through that wire. In every case, the wire broke in the same place, and it was usually after having had the fish on for awhile, and during one of it's runs or jumps. The wire weakened at that location, and "broke".
I would love to give these lures "5 Stars", because they deserve it when it comes to attracting the fish and getting strikes. They "hook up" well too. But, I just can't rely on them when it comes to getting the fish to the boat.
I continue to buy, and use, them because I haven't found any other tube lures on the market that have the action that these do. They do catch fish. But, they also "lose" fish.
I have to end this review, because I need to place an order for more of these tube lures, for an upcoming trip to the Yucatan.

Good simple stuff !
Date:
I use this product since a long time ago (5years) in the Cayos of Cuba to catch a lot of Picuas (Barracudas). This is so simple to do but it works every cast . The green is better than the pink ...Then have a good fishing all . YB

Great cuda lure
Date:
Took these in both red and green down to Eleuthera, Bahamas. The Barracuda there couldn't get enough of it. Seeing a big cuda nail this thing is explosive. Just do a long cast, and reel it in as fast as you possibly can - drives them nuts.
They'll get chewed up, but they'll still work, even half shredded up.

Barracuda Catcher
Date:
I just returned from barracuda fishing in Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
These lures catch fish like crazy! The problem that I had with the lure was that, while fighting a barracuda, the lure pulled apart at the first treble hook leaving only a six inch wire attached to the line. This happened twice and each time the lures had never been used before. These lures do catch fish, but the quality control of their assembly has something to be desired.
