Good ammo, Great bullet

I started playing with an older Ruger M77 in 7x57 for an upcoming cow elk hunt. The Federal Premium comes loaded with 140 Nosler Partitions - an excellent elk bullet. Took everything out to the range this weekend in order to sight in the scope. Although the rifle is older the bore is bright and the rifling sharp. The rounds had little recoil (which you would expect with a 7x57) and grouped around MOA at 100 yards. Hard to argue with that. This should be a fine set-up for elk under 200 yards.

My 7mm Mauser Cartridges can sometimes be harder to find than other calibers, and when you can find them, the selection and price are less than positive. This is one of my favorite mid size hunting calibers and I can always count on Cabels's to have the right cartridges at the rieght prices. Sure enough, coming up on hunting season when the local sporting goods store was out, Cablea's had the cartridges I needed. Thank you Cablea's!

I took my custom Model 98 based rifle in 7MM Mauser to Namibia in Southern Africa recently where I took, among others, a Greater Kudu, Oryx (Gemsbok) and a Red Hartebeest. The 7MM Mauser is not recommended for the larger species such as Kudu and Oryx, although the Hartebeest was also one tough animal. Nevertheless the Federal Premium with the Nosler partition bullet (140 gr) performed admirably. The Oryx particularly was shot through the front leg, breaking it, and traveled through the vitals and lodged just under the opposite skin. The front of the bullet was peeled back and the lead was gone but the rear partition traveled the full distance for a one shot kill. Namibia is a very safe and inviting country and taking your own rifle there is a breeze if traveling via Frankfurt. Not so sure about other countries.
