.470 Woodleigh softpoints

In 2008 I went to South Africa to eliminate a problem Cape buff.
I was using a double rife and the first round was a 500 Gr. Woodleigh Federal round. This is the first animal that I have ever hunted with a factory round. I was not able to get the velocity with reloads and I did not want to damage a double rifle. I hit him in the spine at 32 yards and broke his back. He was hit at a run and dug up 21 feet of ground as he fliped. As we approached he was bellowing and slinging blood from his mouth and nose. I then put two of the factory sledge hammer solids into him. The only projectile recovered was the soft point and it was found just under the skin on the opposite side. The projectile stil weighed 484 grains. You could see the slur on the front of the projectile from hitting the spine, but it still held together and expanded well. I do not believe my arthritis will allow me to hunt like that again, but if I did I would use this load without hesitation.

This bullet is performing as it should, but I do have a problem recovering any meat from the squirrels that I have been shooting. The Arborist foundation has also written me about the tree damage from this bullet.

Buffalo, Elephant & .470 Nitro Express

I used Federal .470 NE Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and Sledgehammer in Zimbabwe in 2004. Primary quarry was 2 cape buffalo. Their performance was excellent. I did not need to use solid on buffalo since the Trophy Bonded Bearclaw did the job at 35 yards. Based on that performance I purchased Federal .470 NE Sledgehammer solids for my 2007 Botswana Elephant hunt. Fortunately my first shot at 15 yards penetrated the heart and was fatal. I will recommend Federal .470 NE ammunition to all hunters in pursuit of dangerous game.

Cape Buffalo Hunting

I have just recently returned from an African Safari where I had an opportunity to harvest two cape buffalo.I chose Federal Premium ammunition simply on the reputation of Federal and the fact that I use Federal in some smaller calibers.I am not at all disappointed in the performance of the ammunition.In the case of both animals,the first shot taken was with Federal Trophy bonded 500 grain soft point,followed by Federal sledgehammer 500 grain solids to anchor the animal.That proved to be very effective in both cases and I will,without a doubt,continue to use the same ammunition on future Safaris.
I also used Federal Premium Tropy Bonded 300 Win-Mag ammunition in 180 grains to harvest a wildebeest,impala,zebra,and warthog with similar success.Using Federal ammunition simply took all guess-work out of my once in a lifetime hunt.
